Thinking ’bout…(Prompt: 01/05/24)

Daily writing prompt
Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

I used to spend a lot of time thinking about the past. And usually not the good stuff. I was usually thinking about all the crap I was still carrying along with me long after it’s expiration date.

All the wrong turns, all the screw ups, all the friends and family I’d lost, and so on and so forth.

As far as the future, while I do set goals, I have learned not to look too far down the road. When one does that, they tend to not see the potholes right in front of them. Or at least that’s my experience.

I’ve learned to try and enjoy the present. It’s the process and the journey that seem to hold the most value.

Spending too long in the past or the future can be a risky proposition. Might be nice places to visit, but I sure as hell don’t wanna live in either one.

Overthinking what’s come and gone or what may or may not come is a waste of time.

If it’s the past, learn what you can from it and move on. If it’s a future plan, make it, plan for whatever eventualities you can and get to the doing portion.

Because as Van Halen put it:

“Right now. It’s what’s happening.”

I agree, we can only live now. Past and future in moderation. Anything else gives us a skewed living experience.
I will admit I’m one of those people that nearly eradicated any surface thoughts about the past, to the point it was as if it all happened to someone else. That has created issues for me this far in the future.
I was just thinking this morning about how our happiness/sense of well being lies in the balance of all things

    1. I’ve done similar with some things before and my experience was similar. Better to address it and move on as best we can. Dealing with it later can be a royal pain to out it mildly.

  4. I love it how you quoted Van Halen!! Today’s prompt was a topic you and I discussed before, so I enjoyed reading your in-depth viewpoint here.

    1. Thanks, Melissa. I appreciate that a lot.

      1. I wanna test you to see if you do have a quote for every situation lol. Let me think of a totally random situation…

Got it! The situation is as follows: You’re running late for an appointment, but you’re hungry so you stop in the closest pizzeria for a slice of your favorite pizza, but once the server hands it to you, you accidentally drop the pizza on the ground.

What quote would you give this situation?? I’m so curious now lol
