Fun, Fun Fun! (Prompt: 01/23/24)

Bloganuary writing prompt
List five things you do for fun.

Never had a T-Bird so daddy can’t take it away. 😛

Let’s see…Five things I do for fun. I don’t know if I can count that high!

Anyhow, enough of me being a smartass.

Here we go:

Lifting weights and working out.

I started this rather late in the game. Where most guys start in their teens and early 20s, I didn’t start until my late 20s/early 30s. We had PT when I was in the service, of course, but I didn’t start hitting the iron hard until well after that time. My main motivation was the birth of my child. I wanted to be strong, healthy and around for a long, long time. I also feel the role of a father as protector is one that a man should take seriously, and I did my best to emulate that.

Playing guitar.

While I have not played as much as I would like in recent years, the guitar has been a reliable companion to me since I was about 10 years old. I lost some interest for a year or two, but it was rekindled when I was about 13 and discovered rock music, and Eddie Van Halen, in particular. Even if I step away from it for awhile, it’s always right there waiting for me when I come back.

Writing poems.

Another thing I started later in life, and honestly I don’t remember the catalyst for it. I just recall that it was a year or two after 9/11 and I ended up writing a poem about war and soldiers, which is a theme I am sure some of you notice I still circle back to at times. Most of my poetry tends to be on the darker side, but I enjoy it and it helps me filter out negative emotions.

Blogging/Image Creation.

My latest and greatest endeavor. Started recently since I found myself with some free time and the need for another outlet. Thus far, I have greatly enjoyed it, especially the opportunities it’s given me to interact with others. It’s been a great journey so far and one I hope to grow and continue.

Hanging out with friends for a good meal.

Every couple months or so, I get together with some friends and colleagues for dinner and a drink or two. It’s always great to catch up with everyone and hear how they’re doing. It’s a relaxing night out and it’s usually a Bavarian or Indian restaurant we end up at, because let’s face it, they both rock. Personally, it’s a three way tie among German, Indian and Italian food for me. I love them all and can’t choose one. 😄

Anyhow, that’s it in a nutshell for me! If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading. Totally appreciated!

And a special shoutout to AI for so accurately capturing my rugged, manly essence in these drawings. The likeness is almost scary 🤣🤣

    1. Thanks, Janet. 😊
I tend to value my solitude, but I do like getting out and about at times as well. Best not to be a one trick pony, I guess.

I started working out later in life too. My motivations were similar; I’m not a father but I want my body to be useful for as long as possible!

    1. That alone is reason enough, Brian! If Father Time wants us, he can drag us kicking and screaming the whole way! 💪

  4. All these sounds o fun. I’ve been wanting to work out recently too. I do yoga but I want to do more than that. Fun read and it seems like you have some great hobbies!

I’m a simple beast. It doesn’t take much to keep me amused and occupied 😄

    2. And you don’t need anything fancy to workout. Just your own bodyweight is great place to start!

  5. It’s wonderful to see how diverse your interests are! Your commitment to fitness, especially starting later in life, is truly inspiring. It’s great how you’ve taken up weight lifting with the motivation to be strong and healthy for your child. And your journey with the guitar sounds like a lifelong passion that keeps bringing you joy.

It’s interesting how you blend creativity and social activities in your hobbies. How do you find that your experiences in the service and as a father influence your approach to writing poems and creating your blog content?

    1. That is a great question and one I have to think about. Thank you for the thought provoking comment, Justin! I am on my way to class, so I will return to give your question an answer it truly deserves!

    2. So, back to your question after a slight delay lol

I think the time in the service influenced the poetry most. I served in a conflict myself, but more importantly, I met members from several eras of the Armed Forces, and hearing some of their stories really impacted me. I’ve also spoken to several other veterans over the years, and their experiences influenced me as well.
As far as being a father, I think it just comes down to my (possibly) old-fashioned idea that a man should be a protector of his tribe and want to leave a positive impact on others. When I’m gone, I want my child to be able to look back and be proud of the man I was and know that I did my best.

      1. Your dedication to serving and learning from others in the Armed Forces is truly admirable. It’s clear that these experiences have profoundly shaped your perspective and your poetry. Moreover, your commitment to being a protector and a positive role model for your child speaks volumes about your character. Your desire to leave a legacy that your child can be proud of is not only honorable, but it’s a testament to the kind of person you are. Your efforts to make a meaningful impact on others are genuinely commendable.

      2. Thank you for the thoughtful reply, Justin. Like a lot of other people in this world, I’ve seen a lot of lousy things happen, and I think that helps mold the lens we view life through to a degree. Sometimes you feel like a match in a hurricane, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying.
