There can be only one

Daily writing prompt
The most important invention in your lifetime is…

I mean, as much as I’d love to go outside the box here, I have to go with the very thing that’s allowing me to post this here reply. Yep, gotta say the internet.

We could debate from now until the end of time whether it’s for the better or for the worse, but no denying it’s one of, if not the, most important inventions in semi-recent memory.

While it comes with it’s downsides, like the always-on mentality, information overload, doomscrolling, cyber-bullying, the disappearance of several brick and mortar stores, etc., it also has it’s positives.

There are so many more learning opportunities available now that weren’t even a decade ago. Hell, the internet got a whole year’s worth of kids and adults through school and work in 2020/21.

It also totally redefined the modern working model, with the revelation that many jobs could indeed be done from home.

You can book appointments, shop for the best deals on anything from dog food, transcontinental flights, to ordering a brand new custom car direct from the manufacturer and flying overseas to pick it up. Yeah, I know a guy who did that. πŸ˜„

And while a lot of brick and mortar stores have disappeared, it’s also allowed a lot of folks to turn their passions into a way to make extra money, or even a career for themselves.

Speaking for myself, it’s given me a fair amount of positives. It’s given me ideas for career development, ways to supplement my income, indulge my creative pursuits (and reveal a few to me I didn’t think of before), and a chance to meet and chat with some fantastic folks from all over not only the country, but the world.

Last time I had the chance to meet so many people from other nations, I had to go to war. This is definitely more pleasant.

So, in conclusion, despite the aggravations it can sometimes present, I would have to say the internet is right at the top of the list for most important inventions in my lifetime.

  1. Great post.

There are downsides to every invention, aren’t there? It’s a shame when people focus too heavily on the negative. If the internet disappeared tomorrow, I know I would certainly be lost without it.

    1. Unfortunately, “negative” seems to be our default settings for most things in life. It takes a conscious effort, at least for me, not to be negative.

And yes, you are 100% right. Every invention has it’s downsides. Hell, life itself is nothing but a game of pros and cons, eh?

Yes, sometimes it takes a concerted effort to do that. Not always easy, but what is, right?

      4. Well, once the melatonin kicks in, I am off to hopefully sleep it away. I’ve even found a calming sleep mediation on YT to play during the night. lol

      5. That’s great to hear. My anxiety medicines do the same for me. Lol. Sleeping is what matters!

      6. I briefly took an anxiety med years ago and it would knock me out cold lol
If I had one today, I’d have taken it for sure just to calm me down πŸ˜ƒ

Such great points on the pro’s of the internet and why it’s such an important invention in your life, Kevin. You’re right about it coming in handy during covid and allowing companies to see that working from home isn’t only do-able, it makes employees so much happier. I also like the way the internet connects people – like you and I becoming friends on WordPress woohoo! Xx

  5. I agree with all the positives! πŸ˜„
But I will say that I didnt grow up with the internet.
I unfortunately might have been a bit naive when I was younger and there are all kinds of weirdos out there. And parents had no way to educate what is right or wrong because they never had the experience with it.

But no that I am β€œold and wrinkled”, I am enjoying all he positives πŸ˜„

    1. I didn’t grow up with it either, but it was definitely one of the most impactful things to come to fruition in my lifetime. And yes, in the “olden days” there was a bit of a learning curve πŸ˜„

        Are you feeling better today?
I wanted to ask you yesterday, but I actually don’t know what the time difference is between us. It is currently 9 in the evening here.
