Lessons Learned

Daily writing prompt
What is the last thing you learned?

I don’t know that it’s the last thing I’ve learned, but it’s a lesson I keep getting reminded of:

Life is ridiculous. Have fun with it.

Class dismissed!

Speaking of ridiculous, our first official Barbarian/Gorilla crossover event.

But, on a more serious note, I’m constantly learning little lessons, but the most important recent one would be that you have to prioritize yourself, because you can be pretty sure no one else will. And truthfully, if you can’t prioritize and take care of yourself, at some point, you really won’t be much good to anyone anyhow.

It’s like the old “if there’s an emergency on a plane, who do you put an oxygen mask on first?” question. Yourself, because if you aren’t still breathing, how are you going to help others?

I’ve learned a lot of things on the educational front the past couple months, and as valuable as that is, it’s the more “life” oriented lessons that have been really valuable.

But really, as long as you are learning, you are winning.

  1. Crossover! Marvel and DC would be so proud! LOL Kidding aside, the pics are great and the bumper cars thing was a fun setting for it all.

    1. I was thinking there might be an Amalgam style universe tale out of this lol
Believe it or not, “Gorillas in bumper cars” came up in a conversation today, so I had to use it somehow 😄

      1. LOL, I love it. A wise writer is always on the lookout for inspiration everywhere. First time I remember something like that was grade school and the teacher saying to write an essay on anything. I told her I couldn’t think of anything and she said write about having nothing to write about. I smartassed her back by actually doing so, lol. Got an A also for my creativity. 😀

Amalgam Universe would be more of combined characters as opposed to side by side, but either option sounds promising. Go for it, which ever route you chose. 🙂

      2. Yeah, I have a few ideas. Either Amalgam or a straight up crossover. It could go anywhere or both places lol

Well, you did what she suggested. So where was she gonna go with that? 😄

I once did an oral report on Spider-Man and got an A. It was way, way before the MCU was popular too

      3. Hey, both could work just as easy as one or the other. 🙂 Hell, I’m struggling on all the potential changes I could make to A New Hope in my story. I ranted about that in my latest blog post. SO many curveballs I could throw in there with how much the lore of the Star Wars universe has expanded in the last 47 years. 47 years since A New Hope… Gawd I feel ancient now, LOL

      4. Yeah, it definitely came out more than a minute ago. I prefer not to think about it 🤣

I’ve got a ton of ideas and none at all, all at the same time lol
I feel like I am on the urge of a dry spell, and the fact that I am fixated on other stuff at the moment isn’t helping matters.

  2. Take it from somebody who has lost YEARS of writing time to drama being a distraction… The ability to detach from it and focus on the writing, however briefly, will do more to advance your writing than ANY skill you could learn.

    1. Thanks much. I am definitely trying to do something regularly. That’s why I am still doing the daily prompts – even if it’s something quick, it’s bit of writing until the next wave of inspiration hits. Or I have time to dive into something more tangible.

Right now it’s more a matter of practicality. The job hunt is consuming most of my time at the moment.

      1. Got to take care of business first, no doubt. You’re doing the right thing though, the more you write ANYTHING the easier it’ll all get. I’m in that same mode also.

  5. I laughed so hard at this I think I woke my cat! This is the best. I’m not sure who’s winning, but I’m pretty sure at the end of the bumper car battle, the chiropractor is going to win. 😊

      5. Silverbacks beat their chests to celebrate. You could try that, but please don’t end up at the chiropractor lol

      6. Indeed not. I have an appointment in a month, I’d prefer not to go back until then lol

  6. There is a line in an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” where Guinan tells Wesley Crusher that there are time in life where you have to be selfish. I think that’s a lesson we can all benefit from hearing.

Also, I don’t think there’s a greater example of the ridiculousness of life than the MULTIPLE images of a barbarian and a gorilla battling in bumper cars! My money is on the gorilla; but I’ve probably watched “Planet of the Apes” too many times…

    1. Indeed it is something we all need reminding of, Rob.

I think Amy is spot on. The chiropractor is going to win lol

  7. I love the crossover with our gorilla friend. Does Mr. Gorilla have a name?

On a more serious note, I enjoyed reading your viewpoint on learning = winning!

    1. His name shall be revealed during tomorrow’s daily prompt reply lol

Thank you. I feel it’s true. Even the small lessons add up over time.
