Best Boss Ever

Daily writing prompt
What was the best compliment you’ve received?

I have received some very nice compliments in my day, but one of the nicest is when people have told me I am the best boss they ever worked for, anywhere.

I don’t consider myself a cookie-cutter, Management 101 type guy. I know professional protocols, policies and all the buzzwords, but when I am working with the people reporting to me, if you saw me in their midst, you’d likely think I was one of them. Because I am. I started at the same places they did, did the same jobs, etc. While you often see the gorilla pictured in a polo, in truth, 9 out of 10, I was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans. You were just as likely to find me covered in grease digging around inside a machine as you were at a desk doing paperwork.

I feel that gives me a unique view and rapport with the frontline workers, because they know I have been through what they have. And they know I am not afraid to get my hands dirty.

During, and even after my time working with my previous teams, several of them told me I was the best supervisor they ever worked for. To this day, I still get messages like that from some of them, and I am very proud of that.

To know my time with them had a positive impact is very meaningful, and gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

  1. That’s the kind of boss I have in my morning job. Although he is boss of his business, he has got his hands dirty and done the job I do.
I have not personally worked with hom on that level. But know he has done it.

    1. Those are the kind of people I like working for, so I always tried to be like that too. There aren’t a ton in the world, but they do exist

  3. Iโ€™m not surprised at all, you gotta be the coolest management dude Iโ€™ve ever met, thatโ€™s for sure ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคฃ Iโ€™ve definitely had my beef with โ€œmanagersโ€ and โ€œsupervisorsโ€ over the years, ugh. Itโ€™s always nice when someone can really understand the job you work, instead of just telling you how to do things without actually knowing. Iโ€™m sure thatโ€™s why you have lots of people who respect you, and youโ€™ll carry over those great qualities to the new job. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    1. Thank you very much. ๐Ÿ˜Š
I try my best to be fair and understanding, but I think the fact that people also knew I wasn’t afraid to knock heads if I had to helped. I was fair, but I wasn’t a pushover either.

We’re similar in our management styles too. The first company I managed for taught me to always do the least desirable tasks yourself so your employees see you as part of the team. I got a Facebook message a few years ago from an employee I honestly didn’t even remember who told me that she was now a manager herself and was able to finally provide for her family, and that she felt the lessons I taught her helped her get there. Even if she didn’t stand out to me as an employee, I was touched, haha. I had a lot of people work for me in those days and a lot of them were unfortunately just “filler” but I tried to give them due attention, and apparently it worked.

    1. That is always great when you hear a success story like that and you got to have a hand in it. It really is one of the best parts of that type of job. Amidst the frustrations, things like that make it worthwhile.
I literally just replied to a text from a former employee who was looking for some advice. The fact that they still think of me at times like that is quite meaningful.

I remember when I first started, people said I would have to change and “act like a boss”. Nah, no thanks. I’m me, and that worked out ok for the most part.
