Because Sammy Hagar said it far better back in 1987 than I ever could.
One of the most beautiful songs off Sammy’s 1987 album I Never Said Goodbye.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform this song live many times over the years. Sometimes acoustically, but also during his time in Van Halen in the early to mid-90s.
When performing with Van Halen, this was often his “solo spot” during the show. Initially, he would play the song by himself with just an acoustic guitar for accompaniment.
On later tours, it became a whole band affair. It would start off with just Sammy and his guitar under a lone spotlight, which would be the majority of the song. The rest of the band would join him around the last minute or two to close out the number, with Eddie laying a tasty solo over the top.
When the band kicked in and the stage lights came up, the feeling throughout the venue was downright electric. Even now describing it gives me chills in a good way.
Below is a performance from 1995 in Toronto during the Balance tour.
Good tunes and good times.
RIP, Eddie. Still missing ya.
