Six Song Sunday: 08.25.24

Since I have not done a Triple S in awhile, I figured why the hell not.

A few tracks you might not know, a few you might not have heard in awhile, and some you probably know inside and out.

Black Sabbath – “Black Moon”

A fairly hidden gem from the unknown/underrated Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath. No, it’s not Ozzy and it’s not Dio, but Tony Iommi still rips, and Martin has a set of pipes. Check it out.

Van Halen – “5150”

The title track off Van Halen’s 1986 album, the first with Sammy Hagar on vocals. I could go on for days about Eddie’s genius, but I’ll just drop this live version from Live Without A Net, because it’s killer. Eddie’s solo is absolutely nuts. Studio version is incredible, but the live version flat out KILLS. Worth the watch just for the pure joy of seeing these guys having a total blast.

RIP, Ed. Always miss ya.

Whitesnake – “Kittens Got Claws”

Off 1989’s Slip of the Tongue album. The follow up to the massive 1987 album featured Steve Vai on guitars. For some reason he got a lot of grief for “selling out” by joining Whitesnake. Meanwhile, he had spent the previous few years playing for David Lee Roth. Not like DLR wasn’t mainstream too, ya know? Anyhow, SotT is a great album, and there’s a lot of cool stuff on it in my opinion.

Tuff – “I Hate Kissing You Goodbye”

These guys came along a bit late for the hair metal boom of the 80s. This tune is off their 1991 album What Comes Around Goes Around. By ’91, Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder had taken over the world, and hair metal moved onto it’s own little quiet island. Regardless, there were still some cool tunes, and this one is a classic “power ballad” that would have likely been huge 2-3 years earlier.

Steel Panther – “1987”

These guys are just flat out funny. They started out as a Van Halen tribute band called The Atomic Punks before changing their name to Steel Panther and recording their own material. They are kind of a spoof, but the music is solid. This ode to the 80s is a great tune, but a warning, some of their lyrics are a bit “off”, so if you’re easily offended, they might not be your cup of tea. If you have a sense of humor, however, you might get a kick out of them.

Ana Moll – “Making Tapes”

This song is like a year or so old, but it has a total 80s vibe, and references Fieros and all that good stuff. ๐Ÿ˜„ Yes, she is scantily dressed, but she has a hell of a voice. Reminds me a bit of Pat Benatar actually. And the music is quite solid too.

  1. Excellent choices all, even though I so do love Ozzy.
And of course Iโ€™m partial to one in particularโ€ฆhmmmmmm if only we could guess which one that is? ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜œ

I love Ozzy too, but there was some underappreciated material in other years as well. Figured I’d throw one out there. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. Good choices. How do you feel about Carlos Santana? One of my favorites.

    1. Carlos is great. He has a very fluid style and great sense of composition. Funny enough, I heard “Smooth” at the store today. ๐ŸŽธ

  4. Good listening! I hadn’t thought of Tuff in ages, but I liked their songs so much back in the day, along with all the other hair bands. ๐Ÿ™‚
