Six Song Sunday: 09.08.24

Good morning and welcome to another edition of Triple S. A selection of songs you might know, might not, or haven’t heard for a minute. From the famous to the obscure, I will try to feature a bit of something for everyone.

Here’s this week’s tunes. Hope you enjoy!

The Firm – “Satisfaction Guaranteed”

The supergroup formed in 1984 by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, the group also featured Tony Franklin (Blue Murder) on bass, and Chris Slade (AC/DC) on drums. This song is from the 1985 debut album. No, it’s not Led Zep or BadCo, but it’s a pretty cool tune. Bonus points for Tony Franklin’s epic hair.

L.A. Guns – “Never Enough”

Off L.A. Guns second album Cocked & Loaded, this is the album that featured “The Ballad of Jayne”, which is quite possibly their biggest hit. This was one of the first singles off the album and it’s a rocker, for sure. Probably my favorite song from them. The group is still active, sometimes in multiple incarnations, to this day.

Dokken – “In My Dreams”

Off 1985’s Under Lock And Key, this was the second single released off the album, and, in my opinion, the song that really placed Dokken in the mainstream. They were popular prior, but this album was where they really hit their stride. Great riff, great solo, great tune.

Sophie B. Hawkins – “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”

Because this tune is just plain sexy AF.

Billy Joel – “Vienna”

Off the 1977 classic album The Stranger, this song was not one of the singles released off the album, but it’s one of Billy Joel’s most popular songs, and if my memory one of, if not his own personal favorites. Either way, a fantastic tune. I think the firs time I heard it was on an episode of the old TV show Taxi, if you can believe that.

Pat Travers – “Snortin’ Whiskey”

Pat Travers is a Canadian blues-rock singer/guitarist who is fairly well known, but not ultra-well known, if that makes sense. 😄

He has had a few popular songs, of which this is one. The main hook in this song is the line “Snortin’ whiskey and drinking cocaine”, but it really is a good tune once you get beyond the novelty of that lyric, and also features some great guitar work from Pat Thrall.

    1. The Firm had a lot more good songs than they were really given credit for in my opinion.
Vienna is just a flat out classic as we’ve already discussed 🙏

        Yes indeed.

I thought I wouldn’t know the Dokken song but then was taken back in time. 🙂 Thanks for that.
