School Daze

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

If I had to pick one, I think I would definitely go with History. It’s always been an interest of mine, and to be honest, my high school history teacher was cool as hell and made it fun.

I was always drawn to historic wars, even when I was quite young. I used to love hearing or reading war stories, especially if they were told by people who were there. It’s fascinating to hear their perspectives on what happened and how things went down.

I recall one time when I was very young, I asked a gentleman who served in WW2 and was at Normandy what it was like, purely out of young child’s curiosity. It was not until years later when I was older that I understood why he declined to speak about it. At the time, I did not understand the true magnitude of what had happened there.

This did not diminish my love of history. If anything, it increased it. I studied as much as I could about some of history’s great conflicts and tried to soak in as much as I could.

I say this not to glorify war, because I have been there, and while I was fortunate not to witness anything truly horrible, I did see enough misfortune, and when one is standing in the desert and it’s literally raining oil on you, you appreciate the sacrifices so many have made across the centuries.

I don’t get to read or watch as many documentaries as I used to, but I still try to take in some historic material when and where I can.

It is interesting to see how much things have changed, and yet not changed, over the span of thousands of years.

Have a great day, folks. Go make some history. Or at least read about it.

I love some parts of history. Others, not so much.
So much for not doing a daily prompt, eh?! 😆

Also, I caught a typo before WP could jack me up too much. It tried to change it to “history releases itself” haha 😆 hmmm….🤔

  2. I’m funnily enough modelling US army uniforms in three publications a friend has written. Same you can’t post pictures in the comments but the books are all about the American Civil War and the uniforms worn by the soldiers in their different regiments.

    1. If you’re interested in history here is a piece I wrote about Scottish history and why the country is still under English rule

The Massacre of Glencoe, the Jacobite Rebellion, the Battle of Culloden Moor and the Subsequent Highland Clearances ⚔️

      1. I’ll have to do a post on here about the books and a few facts about them. The guy is an absolute fountain of knowledge when it comes to the American Civil War. The books I’m in are about the uniforms of the soldiers from both sides and their specific differences between each other on the same side as in Kentucky it can be different from Alabama.

      2. I actually used to love reading up on the uniforms of military units throughout the ages. Always a lot of stories behind them!

  3. I used to hate History and Geography when I was in school 😂
I’m pretty sure my favourite subjects happen to be the least favourite for many.
But these days, I love to read historical fiction. Suddenly history seems very interesting now that there is no prospect of boring things like exams.

    1. There is that too. But, since I enjoyed history, the exams were pretty easy to me.
Math? Leave me alone, please. I detest it 😆

      1. History was a nightmare during school days. But I find it very intersting these days.
You guessed it. Math was an absolute favorite of mine. There’s logic and multiple ways to get the right answer! It certainly had my back while I got my engineering degree. My other favourite subject might have you running for the hills 😂

      2. Chemistry? Biology? Quantum physics? Hit me, I can take it LOL
I truly admire people who have that kind of bandwidth and dedication. It’s sadly, just not in my wheelhouse. Ironically, I know and hang out with a lot of engineers and they sometimes say they wish they were as smart as I was. I’m like wtf you on? 😄😄

      3. I hated Chemistry and Biology with every fiber of my being 😂😂😂
        Physics, English were favourites too.
Well, Kevin, there’s a difference between being book smart and street smart, I guess. Somehow life doesn’t offer any problems that can be neatly disassembled and solved by equations!

I suggest checking out this channel. It has some excellent old footage from 1910 to 1990 👇 ,

Thank you for your service, Kevin. Indeed you’re part of a lineage.

I had 0 good History teachers and terrible memorization skills, but I did have one great Civics teacher I’ll forever feel indebted to for helping me to think through hard or even impossible questions. That’s probably what sparked interest in philsophy/ethics.

At any rate, I think we both know history is going to be made very soon. I wonder what parts we’ll have to play in it?

I didn’t really start to love history until I started teaching it. I feel like so many teachers taught the facts without caring about the stories behind them. Since I can’t teach something I’m not interested in, I tried to make it better. It is so fascinating!

I will admit, I have taken so much in I have forgotten much as well. I got hung up on WW1 and WW2 and a lot of prior knowledge was lost to a degree.

  12. For me, it was all about science and chemistry. I even earned a college degree in chemistry. I got into history as a young lieutenant, and now I love it. History is fascinating, especially when we see events repeating themselves, as Laura said. We definitely don’t learn from our past.

Chemistry? I salute you, sir! I absolutely do not have the bandwidth for that. I admire your dedication, Edward!

      1. It’s definitely sad because we could avoid some of the pain we’re experiencing right now if we just remembered our past and avoided those mistakes. Chemistry is fun as long as you don’t mix it with physics; then it’s a pain.

  13. I’ve always loved history too. When applying for university and asked to submit my choices for university majors, I applied for both English and History. Got accepted for both at both universities I applied to, and went with my primary choice of English for my major. I did consider the possibility adding a minor in history. However, despite taking a lot of classes that taught about various historical periods, and knowing that they weren’t from the actual ‘history’ department, I was surprised how few were cross-listed as history! The only ‘history’ class I took was the Intro to Canadian History class that I needed to count as a second teachable so that I could apply to teacher’s college, meanwhile, I had also taken these classes:

Intro to Medieval and Renaissance Studies (not a class from the History department, but instead from the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, completely disconnected [I was shocked that it wasn’t cross listed with History when I took it my first year of uni]),

Greek Myths (but that’s a class from the department of Classics and Archeology, not History),

Ancient Civilizations (also Classics and Archeology),

Italian Renaissance Art and Architecture (from the department of Art, not History),

Indigenous History, Pre and Post Confederation (but that’s Indigenous Studies, not History)

But none of those counted as “History.” 🙃

    1. Also, I had chuckled hard at the fact that I had studied the exact same time of period of Canadian history twice. And then shook my head in wonder that it taught from the British perspective was considered “History” but when it’s taught from the Indigenous perspective, it’s not “History”, nor even cross-listed as such. I actually just checked on Brock University’s website, and still now, the department of Indigenous studies has classes cross-listed with women’s studies and with social studies, but none cross-listed with history. I still find this strange.

      1. Oh, and studying it twice was not a waste of time! I learned a LOT that I had never learned when I had taken the Canadian history class. Like about the residential schools. Those weren’t covered in Can His. (Maybe they are now, since the residential schools became big news a years ago, but that happened a few later later after I had graduated.)

      2. That’s odd indeed. Why would another country’s version be considered “history”? Just shows the old ways sometimes die hard.

        Liked by 2 people

      3. Oh, I meant British pre-confederation, and Canadian post-confederation. The whites versus the natives. (Similarly, it wasn’t the Canadians fighting against the Americans in the War of 1812, but the British versus the Americans, because Canada wasn’t its own country yet.)

      4. Ah, I see. When it comes to all the territorial breakdowns of many moons ago, I am not always extremely well versed lol

    2. None of them counted as history, and yet, they all sound quite fascinating! Greek Myths sounds particularly interesting!
I never had the patience and or bandwidth for college when I was younger. I think when I graduated HS, I just wanted out. So, I joined the Marines instead 😄

  14. Our son also loves history. He said to me the other day that he wished he was living in one of ‘the more interesting times in history’. I pointed out some of the things that were going on in the world right now and he realised he is living through this part of history – one day all that is going on will be written down and a kid somewhere will read about it and wonder what it was like to be alive when it was going on!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Yes, we rarely forget that while we read about history, we too, are making it. Many moons ago, when I was sitting in the Persian Gulf, it never dawned on me that people would one day be reading about it as “history”. Strange feeling indeed.
