Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?

01/10/25: Bumping this one up because I rather like it, and wanted to add a bit of gorilla magic.

RIP, EVH. Still missing you.

I don’t know how far back WP wants us to go in the Wayback Machine here, but I’m stopping round about my 20s. My blog, my rules.

The one item I am really attached to is one of my guitars. It wasn’t my first, but it was, and still is the crown jewel in my collection.

The Ernie Ball Music Man Edward Van Halen Signature Guitar:

When I was growing up, Eddie Van Halen was my hero. He was, and always will be, my favorite musician ever.

Most people are used to seeing Eddie with his iconic Frankenstrat guitar:

But over the years he has played a multitude of different guitars, and in the 90s he worked with the Ernie Ball Music Man company to design a new signature model.

When these were released I absolutely knew I had to have one.

The closest dealer to me was damn near in NYC, which is not a couple towns over from me to say the least. Being the days of no e-commerce, I got on the phone ASAP and called the dealer.

I was torn between a red and a gold one originally, but two things stopped me from getting the red model:

One, Eddie played a gold one primarily, and two, it was a 2-3 month wait for a red one.

Gold it was.

It was still a tortuously long wait even for the gold. It was still damn near a month before it arrived. These things were basically made to order, so they were rarely ready to ship immediately.

Anyhow, when it finally arrived, I tore the shipping box open, cracked the case and I was in love. I think I stared at it for about 30 minutes before I even played it. It was so elegant in it’s simplicity.

And when I finally did play it? Man, forget it. Smooth as butter and played like a dream. Even my uncle, who was a diehard vintage guitar guy, loved it.

We’ve been together a long, long time now. And even though I don’t get to play as often as I’d like these days, when I do it is right there waiting for me as magical as the day we met.

RIP, Eddie. Still missing you.

  1. You pay guitar? It’s awesome! ⭐️ I first heard β€œJump” by Van Halen in the mid 80s. The music was great then! πŸ‘

    1. Yes, I do play, Stephanie. Not as much as I’d like these days, but these rusty fingers can still tear it up from time to time LOL
Van Halen is my all time favorite band. Ever. That said, while I am a diehard 80s rock and metal guy at my core, I do enjoy a lot of other music too!

      1. Super! 🌟 Sorry about the misspelling of the word β€œPay.” πŸ˜…I meant to say β€œPlay.” It’s great to play a musical instrument. I used to practice an acoustic guitar several years ago but plan to pick it up again. Great post! βœ¨πŸ™Œ Good night!πŸŒ›βοΈπŸŒŸπŸ’«

But on a serious note, have you considered bass guitar or another instrument? Lots out there to try!

    1. Thanks, Pooja. Yes, I have parted with a few guitars in my day, but not this one. Never will either.
Indeed he was. Sorely missed here.

      Thanks, Susan!
Do you still play at all?

      Liked by 2 people

      1. No, I can’t play any longer. I was injured during my time in the Royal Navy and can’t use my dominant hand (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). So, obviously, I chose to write out of spite! πŸ˜‚

But bravo to you for adapting and finding another creative outlet. Music’s loss is writing’s gain!

  12. Very sweet looking guitar, Kevin. EVH was killer! Did you know Wolf hosts a show on SiriusXM called ‘WolfΒ Van Halen’sΒ Top of the Pack,’ a series featuring his most-admired classic rock songs. 🎸🎢
I tried guitar for a short time but the strings always hurt my fingers too much LOL. I switched very early on to piano and eventually added the pipe organ (the big mothers you see in church) which is a total blast to play. I retired from my job as organist/choir director after knee surgery. It was way to difficult to move my legs fast enough after surgery to play the foot pedals but it was fun while it lasted. 🎹 😊

    1. I did not know, or don’t recall knowing, that he hosted a show. I also don’t have Sirius, so…lol
I do now the man can play though! Talented like the rest of the family!
That pipe organ must have been wild! Unfortunate you had to give it up, but sounds like a great time!

      1. Definitely talented family. Alex’s drumming and EVH’s guitar in “Hot For Teacher” are insane! That song is a great showcase piece for DLR, too.

No big deal! I was due to retire any way and looking forward to spending time with our grandbabies; I didn’t mind giving up the organ. We have a piano and I’m trying to teach our youngest who’s almost 5. It’s challenging. πŸ˜‚

Beautiful guitar. My brother plays and loved Eddie. I only learned the riffs to smoke on the water and iron man πŸ™‚ but I love guitar even though I’m a piano girl

  18. Quality πŸ™Œ I’m an acoustic guitar man myself. I started playing nigh on 10 years ago now and my aim was to be able to play every Oasis song on the acoustic. I know all the chords necessary for doing it but the bipolar restricted my ability to afford the time towards practicing. The balls in my court now and the more I play the better I will get 🎸
