PSA: Likebombing, Spam Liking, Etc.

Does likebombing drive you crazy?

Now, aside from the occasional snap decision to pull a post when I doubt the content before thinking it through, I consider myself a fairly easygoing fellow.

Lately, I haven’t been able to check in daily, so when I do make it back, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing that your notifications are completely buried because someone went on a total rampage with the “Like” button.

Takes a few days off. Comes back to…WTF??

Now, please don’t misunderstand me. I truly appreciate likes and comments as much as anyone else.

What I speak of is far different. I am talking about the rapid fire liking of 10, 15, 20, or more, posts back-to-back-to-back that there’s no way anyone could have read them all. Or better still, the nonstop blitzkrieg of liking every. single. comment. on a post.

One day recently, I had a post with 98 comments and someone went right down the line and liked every single one, completely annihilating my notifications sidebar! 98! And then they couldn’t even be bothered to like the damn post itself??

Like, seriously, dude?

I know I am not the only blogger who has taken issue with this. I have linked to Liz as an example, but she is far from the only one to call this out. So, it’s not like I am being bitchy just for the hell of it.

I don’t know if it’s meant with good intentions, but honestly, it really is frustrating beyond belief. Lord knows how many replies to comments I have missed because of this.

Makes me wanna throw my monitor, man.

When I see legit bloggers getting blacklisted as “spammers” or “bots”, while someone is liking 98 comments in 98 seconds (and not even liking the post, I’ll say again), I kind of have to shake my head. Clearly, there is a disconnect.

So, if you are one of those who likes 20 posts in a matter of milliseconds and rolls merrily on your way, please stop. You clearly are not reading and you clearly are not interested in true interaction.

And side note: If you are trying to build a following, that ain’t the way. All you are doing is pissing people off.

The preceding is a public service announcement from SAL – The Society Against Likebombs

Have a great day, folks!

P.S.

If you’re bored, here is my reply to the actual prompt from last year. ๐Ÿ˜„

  1. Yes. I have had this again over 2 days ago where my notifications were full if likes by one persin who has not obviously read all those posts in that time. I lost count how many I had with this blogger starting with the letter r in the persons blogging name. I was pissed off about it.

Thank you for linking with my blog post when I aired off about it.

It’s these kund of likes that won’t get me following a person, regardless whether their blog was good.

    1. I distinctly remember you posting a couple times about it, and I have seen other folks outright asking certain people not to do it, yet they persist. I don’t know if it’s a communication barrier, a bot, or just plain disrespect, but it’s definitely frustrating.

      1. The one that I complained about to WordPress who said they would monitor it, can’t have done anything because when I started being more active again, my comments are being liked by that person wherever I go again.

It plain disrespectful and they should be stopped. Not picking on legit bloggers and peanalising them for no reason when you get serial likers who don’t engage at all and it being obvious that they gave nit read posts in that short time they liked.

I would name abd shame. But if I do that, I will be promoting their blog for something they don’t deserve.

It didn’t used to be like this years ago when I first started. People were respectful using it.

I believe it still stands as I complained to WordPress years ago that if I removed the like button from my blog, then it should reflect the same on the reader. But it doesn’t and they won’t make changes for it to do that. But from changes I have seen when WordPress have messed about tweaking and changing things, this could be done.

      2. Oh, I am sure they could do something about it if they wanted to. Much more fun to muck about with things that are not really an issue though, I guess ๐Ÿ˜„
I won’t name the people because I prefer not to stoop to that level, but they know damn well who they are, and they know they’re not investing legit time to read or interact.
I also don’t expect it to change, but I figured I might as well have some fun with it ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜„

  2. Liking 98 comments in 98 seconds. That is impressive. I understand your frustration but this post was funny, and your gorilla pictures were funny. It reminds me of the woman on Amazon who wrote ten book reviews per day every day, sometimes 20, all of them five stars, all of the reviews were short, and all of the reviews sounded roughly the same. She was a super duper speed reader and loved every book she read. I have a feeling she may not have read all those books.

    1. Yes, that seems more than a bit excessive, for sure lol
I might be exaggerating slightly, but not by much. Either way, liking 98 comments in succession just buries everything and really is not necessary ๐Ÿ˜„

There’s just no need for it, and it is not the way to build rapport or a following.
Of course, there’s an element of transaction to most things in life – but there’s limits, and leaning too hard into that completely disregards genuine interaction.

  9. Yep, it happens a lot. If someone comes to my site and leaves, let’s say, one or two likes, I might visit their site to see what kind of content they have. But this likebombing stuff is for the birds. lol

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, that’s totally different, and honestly, you have to put yourself out there a bit somehow to interact and build a following. But…it needs to be followed up with real interaction. A “like” or quick comment is like the icebreaker.
And I am not going to sit here and say I comment on every post, but those of us that have built a foundation of interacting with others know and get that sometimes folks only have time for a like to show their appreciation. What we’re talking about here is way, way different. Totally insincere stuff.

      1. Oh yeah, I agree 100% with you.

  10. After nearly 2 decades of blogging, I don’t have a large following and traffic to my site is minimal. Not a complaint, just a fact. So, when I get a couple of likes from non-followers, and check out their sites, there is usually no connection whatsoever to what I mainly blog about. But once in a while, I’ll find a gem of a blogger and follow them. So, for me, the good outweighs the bad.

That said, if I had to deal with the volume of “likes” that you and others above refer to, it *would* drive me bananas (pun intended ๐Ÿ™‚ ). Thank you for pointing out an issue I really wasn’t aware of.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I see likes as an icebreaker, in a way. And realistically, not everyone can comment all the time. I totally get that.

  13. I don’t think WordPress helps, the reader needs some serious tidying. It’s so much harder to find your people than when I blogged 12 years ago. The tags, even niche ones, are filled with unrelated content.
It fosters Instagram like behaviour for only showing you surface level content. I’ve only been blogging on this account since October, but the difference from last time, quite shocking.

  15. I just learned that ‘likebombing’ refers to people who like multiple posts without actually engaging with the content. At first, I thought, ‘Any engagement must be good for improving the blog’s reach.’ But in reality, this behavior offers little value to the author and doesnโ€™t help attract the meaningful audience you truly want. Personally, Iโ€™d much prefer genuine connections and authentic engagement over being overwhelmed with likes that lack substance

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Indeed, and I think the majority of us feel the same way. I admit we cannot all comment on every single post, but these people are just nuts. Way too over the top and counterproductive if they’re looking to build a following.

  16. The first thing I do when going through messages is to delete all the excessive likes and posts. If someone posts 10-20 times a day, I may read one.

  26. This is so true. Itโ€™s fine if you like my comment on some other peopleโ€™s post. I do occasionally as well when I like / agree with that personโ€™s comment.

Stop liking every.single.one of my comments on 100s of peopleโ€™s posts across the entire platform. (Sometimes from months ago? Wtf?) It comes off as stalker-ish and creepy.

Especially when I log in and all my notifications are buried by your spam-liking my COMMENTS no less. Ugh. (and I canโ€™t go back on the app to see if Iโ€™ve missed anotherโ€™s comments on posts, even my own unless I view in its entirety)โ€ฆsuper frustrating.

Not sure why some would think this behavior would be well-received. Of course, none of these people ever really comment very much either, so they donโ€™t know what it feels like maybe to have actual legit comments buried under notifications. Half the time they donโ€™t follow you, and no, donโ€™t like the post or your post. Stop wasting my time.

Donโ€™t get me wrong, I donโ€™t want it to be taken out of context. I absolutely donโ€™t mind if youโ€™re someone I interact with, who likes my comments, who agrees with what I have to say.

But multiple times a day, multiple times a week?

Filling up pages and pages and pages of notifications?

    No. Stop.

  30. When I was earlier in my blogging journey, I used to be so flattered when I saw that someone had liked a whole bunch of my posts, especially if they had also subscribed. But, afterwards, I’d often not see their name in my notifications ever again, and was confused. But, I figured, maybe they were bad at keeping up with the Reader (like me) and had a habit of directly going to someone’s blog to do a catch-up session (like me). But then, I became more aware of the habits of spammers and bots, and then one day I watched someone like-bomb me in real time, “reading” my posts back to back and liking them, starting with some poems that could genuinely be read in under a minute, but then also insta-liking some longer stories, including one particularly long one that took at least half an hour to read, and then continued on down the list to some more poetry, and I was so longer flattered by the behaviour.

That’s the point when it becomes infuriating, because all it does is knock legit notifications off the map. I have watched it in real time too, and it is amazing how fast they’ll blow through!
