The Sporting Life

Bloganuary writing prompt
What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Growing up, I wasn’t really into team sports all that much. I never did the Little League, soccer, basketball, etc. thing.

I would watch sports, but I had no desire to be involved with that stuff. I was always more of a loner, so my mom let me sign up for karate classes.

I did that for a few years and eventually it kind of drifted off. I still liked it, but I got more into guitar playing and things of that nature, and there were only so many hours in the day.

These days, I watch football, hockey and basketball fairly regularly.

And even though it’s fallen in popularity, I love boxing. My dad was way into it, so if there was a fight, it was on the television. He would always go and catch all the closed-circuit fights when that became a thing, but I was a bit too young to be going to those. I grew up when a big fight was AN EVENT, and there was always excitement when the big names fought.

Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Lyle, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Tyson, Chavez. There were a ton of great fighters in that timeframe, and there was always a buzz when they fought.

While I still try to keep up on it when I can, it’s just not the same to me. Fighters used to have an aura, a mystique, about them that just seems to be missing today. Compound that with the outrageous price of pay-per-views and the rise of MMA, and some of the luster has worn off.

Thanks to the magic of YouTube, though, I can pretty easily relive the excitement of the classic fights and fighters of bygone eras. Even going all the way back to the likes of Dempsey, Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, etc.

While I have been known to pick up a football or basketball and toss it around or take some shots from time to time, nowadays I am pretty content to just lift my weights and be a spectator.

Think I’ll watch some Hagler Vs. Hearns now though.

    1. That’s ok, to each their own!
We all have our passions, after all. If we all liked the same things it would get pretty boring, eh? lol

  4. I did karate for few years too in my early teenage years!
I am not one for team sports and certainly nothing with a ball, so I had not too much choice than joining gym.
When I noticed people cared more about taking pictures and videos for their social media, I bought a cardio machine so I can do it at home ๐Ÿ˜„

    1. We had a gym at my old workplace, but obviously I don’t have access to that anymore lol
I have some equipment at home and there’s always calisthenics workouts, so I’m good.

An re: karate. I think if I tried to throw a kick these days, something would quickly go awry ๐Ÿ˜„

      1. Ah, sorry to hear!
You are skilled with AI art, though. There is a market for that, e.g. designing book covers or posters.
I am on this site called 99designs.com and some clients specifically allow clipart and AI.

Hahah. I used to be quite flexible, but nowadays, I need a forklift to produce a kick ๐Ÿคญ

Interesting, though. I may have to check that site out. Thanks for the tip!

And considering I can’t even feel my leg other than pain if I move it a certain way, no kicking lol

  5. I used to watch boxing when I was younger. Now I rarely hear about the events. Has MMA taken over?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Yes, it seems like MMA has pretty much overtaken boxing in combat sports popularity. Although lately, I haven’t even heard much about MMA.
Now that Endeavor owns both UFC and WWE, I expect there will be a lot more exposure forthcoming. Although, the whole Vince McMahon situation could be a bump in the road at the moment. Even though he resigned, I am sure the stench will linger for awhile.

  6. I love Boxing too,. My grandfather was a Scottish champion and fought out of New York in 1926 – I have his NY State Boxing Commission Licence. Trouble is, most big fights now are so expensive to watch even on TV, and the TV companies here in UK don’t seem interested in ‘;lesser’ fights. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. No, they are not interested unless it’s a blockbuster fights, and of course, no one wants to fight each other, as promoters are worried about their meal ticket getting beat.

That is so cool about your grandfather! What weight class was he?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. He was welter weight. Unfortunately, I can’t get hold of his Win / Loss record. (His brother also fought out of New York, and he stayed on and spent the rest of his life, with my Great Aunt, in Brooklyn. It was them that got me into Baseball as a very young kid when they gave me a book – that I obviously didn;t understand at the time – called ‘The Dodgers Way to Play Baseball’ by Al Campanis. Still got it too. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Iโ€™m not really a sports person. My dad has been interested in tennis recently. How about you? Are you going to celebrate the Super Bowl this year?

    1. I’m meh about the SB honestly. Not a huge Chiefs fan. Plus, my team wasn’t even close to making it there this year, so whatever lol
That said, I will probably still check out at least a bit of it. Do you at least throw it on or don’t even bother?

      Liked by 2 people

      1. I’m also meh about it, but I check out the commercials and half time, and that’s about it. I don’t even know which teams are playing lol

        Liked by 2 people

      2. Kansas City and San Francisco this year.
Conversely, I have no clue who’s playing the halftime show and most of the commercials are released on YT before the damn game, What’s the point? ๐Ÿ˜„

        Liked by 2 people

      3. No way?! They’re seriously releasing the commercials ahead of time? Now there’s seriously no point of even tuning in. I’ll just probably not even bother this year then lol

      4. They’ve been doing that for a few years now yeah lol
        You didn’t know? ๐Ÿ˜„

      5. No I seriously didn’t know, that’s how out of it I am lol. I can’t believe February is here now. Time is flying by too quickly.

      6. Yeah, usually a week or two before they start popping up on YT.

Yeah, pretty soon we’ll be saying “I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas again” lol

      7. OMG, you’re right about that. We’ll start to see Christmas stuff at the stores in August.
