SLDS Challenge (02/23/24)

Susan T. Braithwaite, I am truly annoyed at you right now.

Every damned week, you make these prompts more challenging than the last.

Again, this week, I had to fight my way through Hell and Creation to get a decent image for your SLDS Challenge.

But at last, I think I have coaxed a reasonable entry out of it.

This week’s prompt is: Deciphering a cryptic message.

And I also swore that after last week’s misstep, I would not be putting words to it for context, but alas, to find my way through this creative quagmire, I was thinking along the lines of this:

It was 2:00 AM and John Henry Shackleton was no closer to breaking this damned code than he was fourteen hours ago when he started.

“John, we need this desperately,” the Commandant of the Admiralty stated as he looked deep into Shackleton’s eyes. “We can’t afford another loss like the Strait of Impala. We just can’t. Failure is not an option.”

“Yes, Commandant, I understand,” John replied. “Do the boys in Intel have even the foggiest when they may strike again? Anything at all to go on?”

“Nothing. Not a blasted thing!” the Commandant exclaimed as he took a long pull off his cigarette. “They’re working every lead they can trying to find a leak. Those bastards have to have someone on the inside. They knew right where to hit us!”

Shackleton stubbed his cigarette out and finished his scotch. He needed to get to work, and now.

That was at noon yesterday. John pulled himself back to reality with the Commandant’s words still echoing in his head.

“Come on, John. What the bloody hell are you missing?” he asked himself for about the fiftieth time. He took a sip of his drink and stared deep into the enigma.

“Where are you hiding, you son of a bitch?”

Time was running short and every single outcome rested solely on John Shackleton’s weary shoulders.

The alternate takes and misses:

These two were in contention.

This, however, was surely not.

I didn’t ask for a gimp, thank you. I’m not writing Pulp Fiction: The Return here. 🙄

Anyhow, that’s it for this week! Thanks a lot, Susan! 😋😋

  3. I like the first image of the alternate takes, that surely gives trying to decipher something vibes, though more like a treasure hunter than detective… thinking of the movie with Nick Cage but can’t recall the title for the life of me

    1. I liked that one, but there was just enough off about the picture that I decided against it.
Is that National Treasure? Know the name, never watched it lol

      2. I’ve never seen any of them. Perhaps one of these days I will check them out. I’ll add it to the list of 1,000 other things I want to watch. lol

  5. The image you went with was the best. I liked the story too about poor John trying to crack the code. Oh the pressure!!! “We need it now, John” bless him. Hahahhaa had to laugh at the image that didn’t make the final draft 🙂 I love your cheeky sense of humour, Kevin. So good!

    1. Thanks, Janet. It was the only one that checked the majority of the boxes for me, so I went with it.
John needs to get to work or he might get stuck wearing that mask. 😲

  6. Also…what is SLDS? My mind is always in the gutter so I’m picturing chains and a whip.

      2. Well, this week with the creepy mask fellow, I can see where one might think it something more sinister. 🤷‍♂️

I haven’t used Dall-E. I have been using DiffusionBee and Midjourney. I like the style of your images.

      2. I have not tried Midjourney yet, but have been meaning to at some point. Thank you very much, I appreciate that 🙏🙏

  8. Oh no, Kevin, you’ve fallen into story… welcome. One of us, one of us, one of us! 😆 I love the story to go with the images–which are superb! I’m having a good giggle at the gimp. You have to tell me what you put into the prompt for that 🤣

Also, Sorry for getting to your post late, Kevin. For some reason, your SLDS posts aren’t working as pingbacks, so I don’t get the notifications. I’m back at work tomorrow, so I’ll be able to spot them when I’m going through Reader in the future.

    1. Pingbacks are very intermittent these days, Susan. I am having the same issue when people link to me. Some I get, others, not at all.
      It’s definitely annoying lol

I have multiple stories started, but finishing them is the real kicker. Time is not infinite unfortunately 🤣

      1. I understand your pain with the multiple stories! Fortunately, I’ve only ever attempted one seat-of-the-pants story 🫣😬😩. The experience solidified my membership in the plotter/planner camp of writers.

      2. I’m doing ok with it, I just pretty much wait until the inspiration strikes now. I was a bit frustrated the other day, but then I figured why? It’s not like I am on a deadline or anything lol

      3. The way I look at it is that if you’re getting the words down and enjoying the process, then stick to what’s working for you.

      4. Indeed. Trying to force it rarely leads to much worthwhile. Only headaches and who needs those? lol

  9. […] Kevin, you love a challenge, and I don’t see you backing down. In fact, if you head over to Kevin’s blog, you’ll see that he broke his promise to himself by adding an entertaining narrative to his image […]
