A little Saturday rant

You know…

Far be it from me to assume something would work correctly.

So, I was replying to some comments, and I accidentally send one to the spam folder. Ok, fine. No biggie, I’ll just go retrieve it.

Now, admittedly, I don’t check my spam folder often, but imagine my surprise when I found about 50 non-spam comments in the folder. And most of them comments from people who are subscribed and regularly view and comment on my posts. No links, nothing offensive. Yet, there they were.

Granted, there were a good number of spam comments in there, but I will also say that I sent a good portion of them there myself, so the net clearly has some holes in it. The spammers are the tuna and the subscribers are the dolphins in this scenario.

Anyhow, I doubt it will be improved anytime soon, so I guess I’ll have make a note to check the spam folder more regularly. 🙄

Since I am on a roll, I’m going to piss and moan about the intermittent like button and the way I get randomly unsubscribed from blogs I follow. I don’t know how many times I’ve liked several posts and comments, only to go back later to see that, well, whaddaya know? My “like” is not there. It would be nice to make my comment, leave my like to show appreciation for the blogger’s efforts and then move on with my day. Instead of having to backtrack and double-check constantly, maybe I could spend time on WP, oh, I don’t know…reading and writing?

And I just love it when I randomly discover through sheer chance that one of my favorite bloggers has two or three days worth of posts up and I am unsubscribed for whatever reason. Now, I am not always the most likeable fellow, admittedly, but I am pretty sure at least a couple are not bouncing me off their subscriber lists, especially since I am collaborating or interacting quite nicely with some.

And just to hit the trifecta here. Why are the daily prompts so freaking repetitive? I have only been here a short time and I am already seeing reruns? Not like these are a year old even.

The kicker is a good share of folks are paying money to hang out here.

I know most of this stuff is small potatoes, and I do truly enjoy it here, but today, this shit just got under my skin a bit.

Anyhow,

/rant

  1. Sometimes I think those little hiccups, the “holes in the net“ are just the limitation of the whole graphic user interface. There are times, even when I’m in my Gmail account that I will click on emails to check them off, usually to move them to garbage, and I inadvertently move them to a different folder. I wonder how much of that is just a leadtime between our controls and the changes on the screen.

But yes, I’ve been noticing a lot of repeats with the daily rating prompts on WP. A few of them recently, seem to be more than what we’ve had for a while, so I guess it’s a give-and-take thing.

    1. That I totally get, and I know there is some delay. Maybe that’s part of it with the likes, I don’t know. But all the comments that I found in there, I did not send to spam. It was people like you, Amy, Aastha that regularly comment on my pages. And it wasn’t just a couple, it was a ton.
Yet, someone will post a blatant spam comment, with 10 links and a hokey, fake message, and I have to send that one myself. It’s just annoying. Particularly today. lol

  2. Ugh, I’ve noticed this too. I usually subscribe to whoever subscribes to me. So I’ll look back later KNOWING THAT I HIT THE DANG SUBSCRIBE BUTTON and it still says I haven’t.
I just found out about the comments a few days ago myself 😂
Yeah, with all the people they have on here, and are most likely paying, you’d think they’d work out all the technical “glitches”.

    1. It sucks, because I like people to know I read and appreciate the comments, so you feel like a heel when you go in and there’s a bunch of nice feedback and you wonder if the folks think you just blew them off lol

      3. Totally, and I already see what tomorrow’s prompt is and I’m skipping it lol. They def can be a bit whack sometimes, or repetitive. We just need to start making up our own I guess haha 😆

  3. I endorse this entire post. (Including gorilla, as always.) All of these things are happening to me. I feel horrible when I find subscribers in my spam folder. Then I apologize profusely because I didn’t put them there. I don’t want them in spam. And then I’m unsubscribed from blogs that I know I’m subscribed to. And shout out to Kevin – did you see your quote under my Asking Nonsense” featured photo?

    1. Yes, I saw it. Ironic that it had to be used so quickly 😆

It does suck. I shouldn’t have to check the spam daily to make sure legit comments are stuck in there. I get it, from time to time it happens maybe, but 50?? Come on. 🙄

Aastha told me she’s already been unsubscribed from my page twice and it was within the last week. That’s ridiculous.

      1. Quite ironic. Maybe they’re doing it intentionally.

Since this started happening, I now check every day to make sure real people aren’t locked in the spam closet. 🙄

Wow, two times in the past week? That’s really awful. Maybe it’s a glitch? Now I feel like I have to check every page that I’m subscribed to. Because what if I’m missing someone and they think that I’m blowing them off and I’m definitely not.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ll be checking daily from now on too. Lesson learned.

Yes, I was really upset because she had done a NTT entry and had to search me because she got unsubscribed. She wanted to make sure I saw it. Also, the pingback notification is sketchy lately too. I forgot about that. 🙄

      5. Yeah… that’s awkward. If you don’t want to alienate anyone, certainly not people who are wanting to participate to or active with the page. They need to fix that glitch and several others.

      6. I am always going back and forth looking to make sure I have all the entries. Of course, if it’s a first timer, I may not know, in which case I’d be really upset. Certain people I know to look for, because odds are good they might participate. But even that takes away from time I could be working on something of my own, but I need to get a freaking treasure map and find out if X indeed marks the spot.

  4. Ah welcome to the world of WP glitches lol. Sorry, it’s just so funny to me because this was me a few years ago 😅
With spam, I usually go into the spam folder once a day. There are always actual comments stuck in there. At least one or two. And as for the other stuff, there’s no point complaining because WP never does anything about it. I get randomly unfollowed sometimes too and I’ve had people email or DM to ask if I removed them from my subscribers list (I hadn’t). Oh and recently due to some update or the other a lot of people don’t get emails from blogs they’ve subscribed too.

    1. I knew you would appreciate this, Pooja. I know you’ve had your battles with WP. lol
And I know it’s not going to change, and now that I know about the spam, I will be checking it a lot more.
Today, it just annoyed me more than usual. I think it was the sheer number of comments hung up in there, but granted that was an accumulation.
The pingback bugs me a bit, but only because of NTT and challenges I participate in myself. Especially NTT, because I don’t want anyone’s hard work getting overlooked accidentally!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah, the best we can do is try to work around the glitches. It is what it is.

Oh yeah, that one is super annoying. Pingbacks used to be perfect but these days I don’t get most of them either.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yes, the pingback issue seems to have started recently. At first, I was getting them easily. Now, not so much. And I know on at least one occasion, a fellow blogger did not get one for a challenge I had entered. She found it by accident. 🙄

      3. Oh wow, that really sucks. Yeah, the pingback issue is relatively new but so inconvenient 😫

  6. Hi Kevin, I will go over my spam in a bit but really need to ay this: FB messes with me more often. I feel that across the board quality is going down.

    1. I’ve never gone the FB route, so I don’t know how they are, but it doesn’t shock me. Quality tends to dip the longer a product is out there. Sadly.

The subscriber list and pingbacks are the ones that really bug me.

  9. I have blocked a few known spammers and it kicks them right into the trash section now when they comment. I also get an occasional real comment in the spam folder. Ever since I sent the keto-queen and the pomerian-nutjob to the trash though, my spam list has been very manageable. nice gorillas BTW. I got a pic I’m going to use and it generated the gorilla with 2 nips. It was good enough to use though and I’m all about “good enough”

  10. I am not here enough to even know there was a spam folder for our comments. That’s new to me. But the repeated prompts irritate me so much. Probably (not likely…lol) that’s one of the reasons I’m not here that often. (Just laziness…)

  12. The problems with the like button that you describe have been behaving like that for some time now. But yes. It is annoying.

I always check my spam box at least every fortnight as I have sometimes found genuine comments land in there. But thankfully it doesn’t happen often.

And being unsubscribed, I have heard other bloggers mention this happening. So another thing that has been happening for some time. But I don’t think it has happened to me where I find I am unsubscribed from blogs I want to follow.

    1. Sure enough I checked the spam first thing this morning, and there were 5 comments trapped in there. Clearly, it will be an ongoing task, yes lol
None of these hiccups are earth shattering, per se, but it adds up to a fair share of annoyance at times.

  13. Yep, I’ve seen all of that. It’s maddening, but the “happiness engineers” (talk about substituting labels for doing the work) are too busy redesigning things to actually make the software run correctly. I first noticed this almost 20 years ago playing City of Heroes and it now seems to be industry standard practice. Trouble is, if you don’t fix what’s broken first, you’re building on unstable ground.

Well, I have a plan to start investigating and reporting about other platforms. Life has been unstable lately though and it’s prevented me from acting on the plan YET. There are ALOT of options to WP nowadays, something has to be better.

    1. I think the things that sucks is that the community here is good overall. A lot of folks don’t seem to feel that way about other platforms, which is why most stick to here.

Everyone releases broken stuff and/or doesn’t fix stuff when it breaks. Even AAA video games are nothing but a bug fest when they first come out. But, as long as people keep dropping $70-100 a whack, they don’t care.
“We’ll patch it in a year. Have fun in the meantime.” 🙄
