To Sharpen the Blade Once More (3)

Feeling a renewed sense of purpose after his fight with the iron bastard, Korv returned home to rest and relax. He would eat and set about reading the prose written by the fine folks of his village.

Korv made a simple meal for himself. While he enjoyed his treats, Korv knew that excess of anything was ill-advised. Nay, if he was going to regain his strength and face the challenges ahead, he must be mindful of what he ate. He remembered the words of a wise man who once said “All things in moderation.”

After a satisfying meal, Korv set himself down to reading. As he read the words of his fellow villagers, Korv recalled with great joy the exchanges he had with several of them.

He started with the writings of the Fair Maiden Amy. Amy was the designated protector of all the animals within the realm. A cause which Korv admired immediately. Korv found her to be a fascinating person. While she seemed a quirky (by her own description) person at first, Korv suspected she may be a fiery lass when provoked. He made note not to get on her bad side, lest he find out if his speculation was accurate. Through the lens of Amy’s writings, Korv could see pieces of his own life as well, and he admired the courage Amy showed in dealing with the elements of darkness. The two soon became quick collaborators. Korv was attempting to be an artist in his own way, and The Fair Maiden Amy not only encouraged him, but even enlisted his aid at times. This deeply humbled Korv, and he remains forever grateful.

Next he read the writings of the Mighty Sir Christopher. He was a hearty soul indeed! He had faced the fearsome Grim Reaper not once, but twice, and defeated him in heated combat both times. His bravery and belief in self were to be admired throughout the realm. He often carried the Reaper’s skull around with him as proof of his deed. Now this, this was a man Korv could draw much inspiration from: A man fighting the staunchest of battles against the darkest of foes. Verily!

Korv next wished to learn of the latest happenings in the realm. For this, he went to the most trusted source in the village: The Great Abbrah Kahdaver. Abbrah looked to be more mage than town crier, but he assured all that he was merely a bringer of news. Some of his stories seemed a bit far-fetched, but some also had the eerie ring of truth about them. Either way, Korv found his style pleasing and read with joy. Although he still thinks this simple “bringer of news” dabbles in sorcery of some sort. Sorcerer or not, his tomes bring a smile to Korv’s face.

Korv’s reading journey continued with tales from the Legendary Sir Robert. Legendary, because they say he once carried an entire world on his shoulders! Aye, this was power that Korv could admire, especially since right now he struggled to lift a flimsy hammer. Sir Robert was the father of two young squires whom he took great pride in, and he was also a man of education. He instructed the young villagers and took this task extremely seriously. Indeed, this was a man who had Korv’s respect. A man committed to shaping young minds is indeed a man to be commended.

Korv’s next reading adventure took him to the dark and mysterious pages of the one they called Lady Destiny. She was an acclaimed poetess throughout the village, and indeed her words could be simply hypnotic. Lady Destiny had the power to show you a simple image, and with her words, transport you to the most magical of realms. Her words could be haunting, comforting, and sometimes both at the same time. She too was a teacher, but under the cloak of darkness, Lady Destiny weaved a most mystical spell indeed. Her writings inspired Korv to put forth only his best efforts when constructing his own tales.

Korv’s final reading of the evening was a most special one indeed. It was the writings of the beloved Countess Aastha. When Korv first encountered Aastha, she seemed shy and quiet. Somehow, Korv sensed a kindred spirit, and read her writings with great interest. As he read, he learned of the challenges this little one had faced already throughout her young life. Korv was deeply impressed by the courage this woman possessed within her, and he reached out in friendship. To Korv’s delight, Aastha accepted, and their friendship continued to grow. The countess inspired Korv with her positive attitude and he watched with great joy as her confidence grew by leaps and bounds. The day she called Korv “brother” remains one of the happiest of his life. He accepted the name with great pride and called her “little sister”. To his unending delight, Aastha accepted this name as well.

As Korv concluded his reading for the evening, he felt a deep sense of satisfaction and kinship within his heart. He felt refreshed and inspired. He could not wait for the morn to come so that he may resume his quest to regain what he had lost. Korv had found so much inspiration from so many of his fellow villagers, that he committed to recognizing even more of them for their valiant efforts in the very near future. Folk such as these should be saluted.

  1. No brother you can’t make me emotional every once in a while. I am feeling a little under the weather today and your post was a delight to read. I follow all the fellow villagers.
I have no shame in admitting that I feel so much closer to you than my relatives and am grateful for our bond. Thank you for such a true description. Lots of love and good health to you.
    Yours lovingly,
    Younger sister.

    1. Fell better soon, my little sister. You too have challenges to prepare for. You must rest and conserve your energy.
There are many people here who have inspired and encouraged me, and I am eternally grateful to them, but indeed, our bond is a special one, and I meant it very much when I said it was an extremely happy day when you first bestowed me the title of “brother”. It is not a name I take lightly and I thank you so much. I feel the same closeness with you and want the best for you always. You have inspired me in ways you will never know.
      With love and respect always,
      Big Brother

      1. Hahaha autocorrect at its best. Thank you for the kind words and support even at times I failed to reciprocate due to my shyness. You have helped me become bold and self confident. I too cherish our bond deeply and would fight anyone who tries to break it. No you are my big brother not old at all๐Ÿค—โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™

      2. You never have to apologize for that, so don’t be silly. If it helped you to break out of your shyness, then it worked, did it not? ๐Ÿ˜Š
No one will break that bond unless we allow it, and I do not think either of us is willing to do that. Even though I am not there physically, I am there in spirit with you always. ๐Ÿ™

  2. Kevin, this is absolutely superb writing and a fabulous homage to all your fellow “villagers”, myself included.

Stunning images, almost poetic descriptions of all the villagers.

Magnificent Kevin. I’m honoured to have met you here, in this beautiful village called WP. Have a marvellous day๐Ÿ™

    1. Good morning, Chris! I am very pleased that you enjoyed it! ๐Ÿ™
While this tale may be a fictional retelling of my quest to regain my “prowess in battle”, it is also important to me that I acknowledge those who have been supporting and encouraging me on the way. All of you have been here almost since this story has begun, and for that you justly deserve recognition and my thanks. There are others who played a part in this adventure, and I look forward to recognizing them as well! It is I who am honored to have been accepted into this village, and I hope to become, or remain, a valuable contributor. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. I found myself scrolling this morning, and I happened upon Korvโ€™s third installment. As I began to read, I wondered what the odds were that someone else would be called Amy, and then I quickly realized, with a smile, it was me. I am honored to be the guardian of all of the animals at this realm called WordPress. I continued reading and started to get teary-eyed, because I was so touched. I read about the other people of the realm who have made an impact on Korv, and became even more teary-eyed. Thank you for this, Kevin. Truly, it is making me weepy. โ€˜Tis true I am a feisty lass, but my bark is bigger than my bite. (I have zero bite.) I thank you for giving me the opportunity to find a home for my stories using NTT challenges, and having your art to prompt ideas for poems and new short stories. Thanks for the conversations, discussions and for collaborating. Hopefully there is more of that in the future. The art created to depict this lass called Amy is lovely. The cats are well-behaved and theyโ€™re not even trying to eat the birds. Thank you again, Kevin. Your kind words mean a lot. I hope I can return the sentiment. ๐Ÿซถโœจ

    1. All the same, Korv would prefer to stay on her good side. Just in case. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I am very glad you liked it, Amy. I wanted to say thanks to you, and others, in my own way. You, and several more, are very important to this story. You encouraged and supported my efforts, showed me kindness, and considered me a friend when you did not have to.
I have greatly enjoyed chatting with you, collaborating with you, and am deeply grateful that my little creations have given some joy and inspiration along the way. For me, that is extremely rewarding. Here is to more excellent exchanges in the future! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Itโ€™s really a nice tribute to everyone and Iโ€™m thankful for being able to chat with you and collaborate as well as enjoy your art. Speaking only for myself, obviously, I get creative inspiration from the art that you post, which in turn, boosts my creative goals. I also find it extremely rewarding to be kind and supportive to others. Iโ€™m sure there will be more excellent exchanges in the future, as I donโ€™t plan on leaving the Korv Kommunity. ๐Ÿ˜Š

It is really amazing how we all feed off each other, whether taking part in challenges, reading each other’s words, or engaging in discussions.
I make a picture, it makes someone want to create, I see everyone’s creations and get inspired to create more of my own stuff, and so on. One hell of a rewarding cycle here. ๐Ÿ‘

  5. That is really awesome and I am absolutely honored. That outfit is very nice too I might add.

Sorcery? Why yes indeed. In a sense, we all dabble in sorcery. We wield phenomenal powers with only few thoughts. We are capable of the creation of realms both wonderful a frightening whenever the mood pleases.

And you are not alone in your struggles. These old bones ache and cry on even the best days. My son, with his boundless teenage energy, forces me to go the gym and do things I thought I had become too old to accomplish.

And that is one hell of an observation about sorcery. In our own way, you are right, we do practice a bit of magic.

Yeah, getting older and having a trash neck sucks. But I know I am not the only one with that struggle, and I could be a lot worse off.
