We Have The Technology…

Daily writing prompt
How has technology changed your job?

Little Six Million Dollar Man reference for y’all.

Working in a management role of any kind means that tech has certainly impacted my job. Oftentimes, I would end up spending more time sitting on my tail in my office on virtual meetings than anything else.

Now, I don’t know about y’all, but I have one hell of a time staying engaged during these meetings, especially when all the parties involved are onsite and available. During Covid or when a needed team member is off site? Yeah, I get it. But when people are calling Teams meetings because they don’t feel like getting off their lazy ass and going to a conference room down the hall? Please. 🙄

God forbid we interact face-to-face or anything.

And of course, with tech comes the inevitable onslaught of spreadsheets and Power Point presentations. Everyone needs a spreadsheet for every little fucking thing, and of course, everyone loves their pretty little slide shows.

Now, does it make things easier in some regards? Yes indeed. If I was home sick, I could still connect with my team to see how things were going, answer questions, attend those mandatory meetings, etc.

As tech continues to develop it will continue to impact not only my, but a lot of people’s jobs. Advances in automation, AI and other software are accelerating rapidly, and the reality, for better or worse, is that businesses who don’t keep up will struggle to compete and lose out to their better equipped, more efficient competitors.

I figure at some point in time the manager of the future will look a little something like this.

      3. You think it’s bad there… One of us used to work HIGH up in California state government. You remember that line from Red October “The average Rooskie doen’t take a dump without a plan, son”? CA government would require three meetings for that, ROFL.

      4. Oh, I can only imagine. Just in my own little world, I have been victim of 3-4 meetings a day for the most mundane issues that could easily be solved in 5 minutes.
I shudder to think of the nightmare it is on a bureaucratic level.

  2. Yes, technology can be helpful. But sometimes time consuming.
I totally agree with that if people are in the building and a meeting is required, then get up, go down to the conference room and hold it there face to face.

    1. It definitely is helpful. And I am not all doom and gloom about it, honestly. It has been very helpful in many regards. Advances in tech have sped up research and led to medical improvements, which I think it fantastic. And I do value the opportunity it gives me to communicate with people from all over on platforms like this.

But, yeah, seriously. If you can’t tear yourself away from your desk and your fifth doughnut of the morning to attend a 30 minute meeting, you are indeed pathetic.

      2. I think it’s the machine operator in me coming out when I say stuff like that, but I’m sorry, I am just not an ivory tower manager. I like being out on the floor and interacting with my crew.

      3. I would be same if I was in that position of a supervisory or management role. Regardless I am an introvert and if I wasn’t deaf, would still choose face to face over a zoom type meeting.

      4. It’s just easier in so many ways in my opinion. Easier to focus, read mood or intention, etc. A lot can be lost in a virtual meeting and I often find I retain way less from those meetings.

        Liked by 3 people

      5. Yes, same for me regarding easier to focus, read mood.

      6. Agreed also. It’s one thing if you’re talking several offices video conferencing. The same building though; that’s laziness and somebody trying to justify a bloated IT budget.

      7. Exactly. If there’s off site personnel involved, I get it. Hell, I have been sick and had to call in from home myself. But when it’s a site specific team meeting and we’re all literally one to two minutes from the nearest conference room? Come on..

  7. It sounds like you’re juggling the ups and downs of managing in today’s tech-driven world with a good dose of real-world frustration. Virtual meetings can sometimes feel like a slog, especially when they replace those cherished face-to-face connections. And let’s not even get started on the never-ending stream of spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations!

But hey, amidst all the chaos, there’s a silver lining. Technology, for all its quirks, does have its perks. Being able to connect with your team from the comfort of your home when you’re under the weather is definitely a plus. And you’re absolutely right about the importance of staying ahead of the curve with advancements like automation and AI.

It’s a balancing act, isn’t it? Trying to keep up with the tech while still holding onto the human side of things. How do you manage to find that sweet spot between efficiency and humanity in your day-to-day?
