Camping? Why yes…

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever been camping?

In high school we called it “drinking in the woods.”

After high school we called it “War.”

So yeah, anyhow, I have been camping a few times in my life besides that. There used to be some nice spots around here to go chill out for a few days. I’ve not gone in ages, but it was usually a pretty decent time.

My mother was in the “drinking in the woods” tribe and the few times I went camping as a kid was really just that she had to take us kids with her while she partied with her friends, lol. Her partying was pretty tame, but it just wasn’t real camping. I’d like to do it now as an adult but don’t have a friend group who are into that much. I think taking one of those cringey outdoor “survivalist” courses would be fun, if not taken seriously.

    1. Honestly, it never did much for me. It’s fun enough I suppose, but not the greatest thing since sliced bread. My opinion at least lol

  3. I was afraid to go camping when I was a teenager because of the Jason movies. LOL But The Mister and I really enjoy tent camping around the Great Lakes. I hope we get to go this year. And if you go, I hope you have fun.

      1. I’m sorry you must’ve had a bad experience like Patrick. His barracks roommate was an asshole and left his baby boa run all over the room. Not cool!! 😡 Patrick woke up with it on his face.

      2. Nothing quite that bad, but enough to put me off them completely yes.
I would be pissed if someone did that to me like they did to him. F that.

I grew up next to a beach in Alaska, in a big family. Beginning at age 10, I was basically a Lost Boy as a child (but a girl) and the parents were busy and preoccupied during the summer. I was only missed if a chore was necessary and no other sibling in sight. My cousins and I would load up a tent, cast iron skillet, eggs, pancake mix, canned bacon, a jug of water and tang and some utinsels, cups, paper plates, basic toiletries, TP, shovel, ax, matches, and head down the beach a mile or so and build a driftwood house. We’d stay gone a week or better at a time. sometimes going to someone’s home to stock up on food. A lake nearby, we caught trout. Picked greens, peas off the beach, and what berries may be in season. I never wanted to go home, never was homesick. Eventually a parent would send an older sibling to make us come home. Then, we’d go back to our bohemian lifestyle when they got too busy to do a head count again. I’ll take camping any day over civilized life.
