Wolf By The River

You’re dressed up like a sheep

But I can see the wolf within

The tenderness displayed

A veneer atop the sin

You came to me a friend

But you leave me as a foe

You’re a river running deep

Blackened water, evil flow

Once I fell into this river

And I very nearly drowned

You undertow of grief

Tried to drag me further down

I was caught up in the rapids

Going under further still

On the banks I saw you laughing

You were caught up in the thrill

As I made it to the land

I could see your fangs quite clear

This hunt was not quite over

Your intentions crystal clear

As you leapt upon me growling

Wicked teeth next to my throat

I felt a stirring deep

No, today you will not gloat

I throw you off and cast you down

Back into your hellish den

Perhaps one day you’ll kill me

But today you will not win

Through the bruising and the bleeding

I hold my head up high

For as you look upon these scars

Know today I did not die

    1. Hey you! I was wondering where the hell you went. A little reinvention?
      How are ya?

I am always reinventing lol. Seems I’m fickle and flighty

      2. Nothing wrong with a little reinvention. Every day is an opportunity to be something or someone new. Glad to see ya back.

  2. This is another amazing poem. It reminded me of all the toxic people I met before and how I’m still alive and fighting hard!

    1. Thank you so much.
The older I get, the more I understand these people are put here to test our mettle and show what we’re really made of.
To paraphrase Rocky Balboa: “Winning ain’t about how hard you can hit, it’s about how many times you can get hit and keep moving forward. That’s how winning’s done!”

  3. Brilliant. narrative and so true of humans. How has the species become so self involved as to hurt each other?

    1. Thanks you very much, I appreciate that.
While I would speculate that these traits have always existed, time, technology and comfort have possibly amplified them in some ways.
The need to depend on each other may not feel as strong in our modern society.

Or perhaps it’s always been this bad and it’s just that people are finally starting to notice and speak up?

  4. This was such a relatable poem. I think most of us if not all of us have met people who seem like wonderful people but they eventually show their true colours. I have been unfortunate enough to meet quite a few wolves in sheep’s clothing. All you can do is keep fighting and cut out people like that as fast as you can.

    1. Sadly, yes. And it hurts just as much every time it happens. Still, we carry on and push forward because the genuine people we find in this world are truly worth it.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

I can’t help but laugh, of all the ridiculous things I’ve googled on my phone, if I dropped dead today, the latest would be β€œrare genetic gorilla diseases” πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
