Another Day

Another day down in the trench
Amidst the dirt, amidst the stench
Another day of cursed war
Sleeping on an earthen floor

O'er the top we go again
A war that no one's bound to win
No man's land, no land for me
We fight for all that's good and free

The sound of mines, the wretched gas
It billows on down through the pass
It chokes the life from man and beast
More bodies for the Devil's feast

I walk among them, no tears shed
For they escaped this living dread
To be like them I only hope
I contemplate 'midst puffs of smoke

This trench is home seems for so long
This world has gone completely wrong
There's nothing left for me to do
But wallow in this life so cruel

I eat my meal and close my eyes
And close my ears to deathly cries
Somehow I must find a way
To make it through just one more day

      4. What can I say? I’m a veteran. War comes easily to me. lol
And the darker poems are a great outlet to purge negative energies.

    Wow.. So well expressed!!
    Takes you through the scenario.
Walking a dark path, aiming at the light at the end of the tunnel.
The situation demands immense strength of mind. πŸ‘

I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse, but I find I have an easier time writing darker pieces.

  5. I can’t even imagine how horrible trench warfare was. Sitting in wet filth. Scaring rats away that are trying to eat your dead battle-buddy. Hopefully no one ever has to experience that again.

    1. Agreed. A brutal, nasty business to put it mildly.

  6. Apparently I liked this several months ago, so here is a β€œdouble like” and it was haunting to read again.

You paint words so profound and evocative, words that need to be said.

Words that not everyone can say.
But are important for others to read.

    Thank you for that. πŸ™
