I Remember

I remember when this house was new

It was built on lands pristine

I remember when this house was full

Most joyous days you’ve ever seen

I remember Grandma baking

As the family gathered round

I remember late night singing

Never heard a sweeter sound

I remember Mother reading

She always voiced the books with flair

I remember Father resting

In his favorite comfy chair

I remember Grandpa working

Working hard out in the field

I remember how he smiled

And how his spirit wouldn’t yield

I remember we were crying

When Grandpa went to sleep that day

I remember how I felt it

As he slowly slipped away

I remember how we drifted

How we slowly parted ways

And I remember how I miss them

Sometimes miss those long gone days

ยฉThe Beginning At Last

  1. Beautiful and melancholy, but also probably how a lot of people feel ๐Ÿ™ Itโ€™s not anywhere near the same but your poem kinda reminds me of a Five Finger Death Punch song called โ€œRemember Everything,โ€ which is one of my favorites. Love your writing and beautiful images as always Kevin, sorry I got sidetracked lol ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. Thank you, Laura. ๐Ÿ˜Š Always appreciated.
It’s funny how certain family members are kind of like the glue that holds a family together. Even if there’s no acrimony, once that person is gone, there’s sometimes a change and people start to drift apart.
Obviously, other life changes can impact that too, but sometimes that one person is kind of like the first domino.

Reading conversation below, was the same in my family. One person. Very nice poem, if a bit sad, Kevin. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I realized afterwards that my comment might have come across as being negative, with the Matchstick Girl being so bittersweet. You know me well enough from my writing, I guess. I appreciate the view more than you know…
