How About “Less” Attention?

Daily writing prompt
What details of your life could you pay more attention to?

I feel like this is part B of the recent prompt that asked “what things could you do more of?”

I mean, I feel like the answers are going to be similar for a lot of folks:

  • Health
  • Finances
  • Our impact on the environment
  • How we treat our fellow humans

And those are all very valid answers to a degree.

However…

I am going to go in a slightly opposite direction and say that a lot of details in life could probably be thought about a little less.

Maybe it’s just me, but I see a lot of folks (myself included) drilling down too deep on things that really don’t matter, completely overthinking stuff.

Some of us seem predisposed to that type of behavior. For example, we take a small thing that happens at work, and as it makes it’s journey through the twisted pathways of our mind, we turn it into the end of the world. In reality, nine times out of ten, no one even notices except us. And if anyone else does, they don’t give a tinkerer’s damn about it.

I could be talking about this as merely an individual issue, but I think it’s bigger than that.

Maybe my perspective is misaligned, but it seems that more and more, society in general gets too far down in the weeds on things that really don’t matter all that much.

The end result just seems to be more anxiety, depression and overall malaise about our lives and the world around us.

And it’s prevalent in most everything from landing that perfect gig to buying the right shirt.

I mean, yeah. I can get the concept of wanting that dream job and might even allow a bit of overthinking on that one. A little.

But really, when did buying a piece of clothing turn into a life or death dilemma? I get that we all want to look good and maybe even a bit stylish, but I’ve known people that have driven themselves borderline crazy overthinking the fact that they might have picked out or worn the wrong outfit to something.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just totally out of touch nowadays.

If I am, well then, so be it.

But if you ask me (and even if you didn’t 😄), that kind of energy could be put to far better use on other things.

On that note, I just felt the need to rant.

Have a great day and try not to think too hard. 😉

  1. My hubs like to call it Monkey Mind 😂 I believe he got that phrase from Dogen’s Shōbōgenzō.

Thank you, Mary. Yes, they are. Sometimes we truly need to sit back a moment and not think.

  7. I agree with you of course, definitely sometimes we worry too much about the things that are always changing, and may not even matter a month, a day, a year, or a week from now.

My favorite take on this prompt, in all that I’ve read this morning. Knowing what’s worthy of obsessing over is a lost art and sometimes comes to such a point with me that I just short circuit like the Star Trek lady “I’m not programmed to respond to that question.” lol
