A Morning of Disappointment

โ€”

in

I had logged into the platform this morning with the intention of getting caught up on comments, reading and maybe getting a post out there.

What I got instead was a boatload of disappointment.

I am sure several of you have seen Laura’s post by now and know that I had the unfortunate honor of being the bearer of bad news.

Someone stole her work and put it on their blog with zero credit, no link back, nothing.

The only reason we discovered it was because the loser in question left the link back to me from her original post. I don’t know if that was intentional in the hope of getting clicks, or an error on their part. Either way…

I informed her of it and then promptly sent it to spam.

She already put the pictures in her post, so I am not going to dignify this p.o.s. by sharing their name or site any further.

From here on in, this person, bot, whatever, shall be addressed as “Thief”, because that’s what they are.

I was going to throw a profanity laced tirade up earlier, but chose instead to log out and take a few steps away. Truthfully, after that, my desire to be on the platform was nil.

It’s a sad day when something that brings us pleasure and happiness gets soured by some two-bit hack who can’t come up with their own ideas.

The majority of people I have encountered here on WP put a lot of love and care into their posts. To see it cheapened like this really saddens me.

And I am not just saddened because it happened to Laura. I am saddened because I know it’s happened to others like Fandango, Liz and several more as well.

No one deserves to have their work stolen, mistreated and cheapened like it’s just a bunch of meaningless words strung together.

It’s not.

This is people’s blood, sweat and tears that they have graciously shared with all of us. This is the product of their imagination, their spirit and their very essence.

These thieves can steal the words and the images, but they cannot replicate the soul that the true, original creators put into it. It will always ring hollow.

That doesn’t make me feel much better at the moment, but it’s true nonetheless.

In closing, I salute you, my fellow bloggers, for having the imagination, the generosity, and the courage to share your words and images with us.

My light has been dimmed for the moment, but it still burns, and I still appreciate all of you.

Stay cool, and stay original. No matter what.

  1. Thank you so much for all your support, Kevin. It really does mean the world to me, and if you hadnโ€™t told me, I wouldnโ€™t have ever known.

I needed to take a step back today, but I appreciate yours and everyone elseโ€™s support ๐Ÿ™

I want this to stop. Thatโ€™s the thing. Iโ€™m not so upset anymore over it now that I got my rant out, but I donโ€™t want it to continue to happen or happen to other people, like youโ€™ve mentioned it has as well in the past.

It makes it hard to want to stick around, wondering if this is the price you pay to have your creative pursuits out there. Iโ€™m not gonna just give up, though.

Thank you so much again ๐Ÿ™ โค๏ธ

    1. Unfortunately, it probably is the price of being creative, yes. There’s always going to be someone looking for the easy path instead of trying to generate their own thing. That said, it does dampen the drive a bit. At least momentarily.
It was pure chance that I discovered it. I’m glad I did, but hated having to tell you.
      That said…onward and upward. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ™

      1. Yeah, I read a lot of Alan Watts books and I also read a lot of books about how meditation works in the body. I paraphrase Alan Watts a hell of a lot as what he says about life and how we conduct ourselves is rateable to me to describe how I feel about my own experiences, albeit in a different context. When I write about medication I often feel like Iโ€™m copying blindly or just regurgitating the information that Iโ€™ve read about the drug but it is not so, I read about it and understand it and then explain it. I have a lot of posts on here about โ€œThe Wisdom of Alan Wattsโ€ were I have taken a subject that is prevalent and interesting and posted his thoughts about it. I donโ€™t doubt that there is cross over or highly influenced writings by myself on other posts but thatโ€™s because I admire the man.

We are all bound by the language we speak and the symbolism that we share. Our thoughts are not necessarily our own as we think in accordance with these meaning we have a real difficulty to attain a โ€˜newโ€™ or โ€˜originalโ€™ thought.

That last paragraph is Alan Watts inspired btw

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I don’t know that anything is truly original, and that’s ok. Riffing off a concept is how we learn and improve.
Everyone gets inspiration from somewhere. Often, several somewheres. It’s all in how we filter it. At least, that’s this ape’s take lol

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Absolutely correct ๐Ÿ‘ do we have original thoughts? As our constructs are based on the thoughts and ideologies of others before us we are bound by them and our language too limits us from truly expressing ourselves. Imagine if we could have a go at starting society again, would we continue with the current system or would we change the way we live?

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Interesting question. I would posit that we would do some things the same, as we learn a lot of things through osmosis, as it were, and we, even if not completely intentionally, are influenced by people and things around us.
Also, if we started all over, the answer would largely depend on if we had the knowledge we currently have or not. Definitely a lot of variables to consider.

      7. Iโ€™d abolish boundaries and boarders (as in countries) and allow people to roam freely around the world. Thereโ€™s a reason why lions live where they do, and it wasnโ€™t because they were kicked out of their house by us. Their habitat is their domain. Granted we are destroying the environment for many animals and they are becoming endangered because of it. Segregation breeds a divide, and as such a mentality which promotes a โ€˜usโ€™ and โ€˜themโ€™ society. No integration with others and then we see the invasion and bullying in a way of what has happened in the cause of every single war that has happened since we were here. โ€œI have this and your not having any of itโ€ is a child like attitude towards life that is prevalent in the story of our existence as a species. Thereโ€™s no countries in the seas but the aquatic ecosystem has been prevalent throughout our existence. One of the best quotes Iโ€™ve ever heard is from Terminator 2, where John Connor asks the terminator if we make it, as a species? To which the terminator responds โ€œitโ€™s in your nature to destroy yourselvesโ€. Anyway, Iโ€™ll get off my soapbox now and sorry for ranting on ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

    Sorry for this violation, Laura.
That’s exactly what it is … a violation.

Just yesterday I heard about someone who passed off AI writing as their own. I realize this is not the same as what happened to Laure; I’m bringing it up as another case of a cheater trying to coast through life. The vast majority of writers here on WP put in a lot of time into their sites. It’s a disgusting act when someone comes along and steals it or takes credit for work they didn’t do. It’s low and despicable and really leave a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t it?

    Can’t let the bastards win!

No other explanation for it. There should be an easy system in place for things such as this, where they can be reported and have their site shut down. Unfortunately, protecting writers and artists isn’t something WP, or anywhere else really, seems to care about. Your response in defense of Laura is spot on and she’s lucky to have you in her corner. I hope she gets justice.

  11. To have something like this happens really sucks and when it happened to me, I had to choose between quitting blogging or going through the tedious and time-consuming process of starting over with a new blog. I chose the latter and exported all of my posts and images from my stolen, pirated, or hijacked blog, whatever you want to call it, to my new one. It was quite a task but it’s over. I hope it doesn’t happen to me again and I am truly sorry that others seem to going through something similar.

I am very glad you chose not to quit, but I can honestly sit here and say that I might have chosen that route myself. I think it would really subdue my drive to create and share with others. I don’t know…

They have an API that’s super easy to read, but I don’t know any solutions on to how to fix it. That API is both good and bad depending on how you use it of course, like with everything.

Although this too has been mentioned, it would be nice if WP would take more responsibility. Perhaps add an option or two to prevent thieves from simply selecting and copying content. Better yet, employ AI to compare posts and look for plagiarism. Too bad we canโ€™t plant a hidden trigger in the HTML that would lock out a plagiarist from their own work until they โ€˜fessed up to the community ๐Ÿ˜Ž

So… not technically or legally plagiarism since they included that link, but WHY would they think my poem about a dragon and a purple rose would fit in with the rest of their blog about computer tech (news about the latest CPUs, monitor reviews, etc.)? Similarly, random reblogs without an introduction to the post being reblogged? I’ve had my post reblogged randomly by someone who really enjoyed my poem, and titled his reblog post “A Poem I Really Enjoyed” and gave it a introduction saying that I was the author and that everyone should check out my blog. That random reblog was awesome. But to reblog a poem when, for example, you’re not a fellow creative writer, and your blog all about online shopping and about promoting your web store? What!!??? That feels sooo scummy to me.

    1. Yes, thankfully the post got taken down, but it really ruined the mood for a spell. Frankly, we’re still recovering from it. It was very upsetting.
The random reblogs puzzle me. If it’s like the kind you describe, that’s great. The ones with no context? I think its just a cheap ploy to try getting traffic on their pages by linking a popular post.
