It’s Gone

I had intentions of using this image to write a poem about my grandfather.

Unfortunately, words have been failing me these days.

I tossed around words, phrases, ideas.

Nothing.

Nada.

Zip.

I know I am far from the only one to have encountered this. I am sure it’s far more common than I even dare speculate.

The words, ladies and gentlemen, are just plain not there right now. I’m okay with that. It happens, I suppose.

It doesn’t help that this stretch leading up to the holiday is a bit hectic at work. I picked up some extra shifts, so I am in the middle of a run before a bit of time off.

Ironic that at this time last year I had a ton of time on my hands, and now it’s the exact opposite. 😄

Funny how much life can change from one day/week/month to the next. One minute it’s Autumn and the leaves are falling, the next, you’re skating across the parking lot. Blink of an eye.

In closing, in lieu of a poem, I will just say about my grandfather that he was one of the toughest, hardest working, finest men I ever knew.

He was a plainspoken, simple man. Perhaps the above is exactly his style.

Been a long time he’s been gone, but the shadow he cast was a long one indeed.

I was lucky to have him in my life.

Peace out, folks. Be good to each other. 💪

  2. You say you have no words yet you wrote a very poignant post. Sometimes saying very little speaks volumes and if you are writing something that you have experienced, many others will have too and be able to relate.

    1. Thank you, brother man. 😎😎
He was a great man, and I wish I could have had more time with him. He passed away when I was 12 or 13.
When you think of strong, tough as nails old guys, he was that and then some.

  4. I know the feeling. I struggle to find inspiration for posts these days too. I rarely have any scheduled at all. Losing a loved one is also hard. Sending you some love ❤️

Yes, a lot of us seem to be coming up blank these days unfortunately. With luck, it’ll pass soon and we’ll all be back to business as usual. 🤞

  6. This is a strange time of year for a lot of people, Kevin. Christmas affects us in ways we don’t see coming, the bitter-sweet memories that sneak up on us, often accompanied with sadness and melancholy. Hang in, my friend. Your words will come; in fact, I think you said a lot just now and it was very good. ✨

    1. Thanks, Nancy. I’m no so sure it’s the holiday itself, as it is this schedule I am on and coming off not feeling well. It might be a mixture of all those and the holiday for all I know. Likely is lol
Thank you. I am pretty much just posting randomly as things come to me. As I said, the well is fairly dry lately. 🤷‍♂️

  7. I never saw my grandfather. I was separated from because of war and some greedy relatives who were eyeing our farmland in Bihar, India. But I remember him everyday.

    1. That is very unfortunate, but it is good that you keep him in your memories.
Greed can do terrible things to friends and families.

  8. I completely understand. Writer’s block is a real beast! It’s frustrating when the words just won’t come, especially when you have an image that’s so inspiring

    1. I was, thank you. I didn’t have as long as I’d have liked, as he passed when I was pretty young. At least I got some time though.

Life’s pace can shift so dramatically, and it sounds like you’re in a busy season right now. Remember to be kind to yourself during this hectic stretch. Your grandfather sounds like an incredible man, and it’s clear his memory brings you comfort.

Trust the process and know that inspiration will come when it’s ready.

    Peace out.

  12. When writing isn’t working, I do anything else. Stepping away helps. I’m glad you had a positively influential grandfather, Kevin. It’s important for us to have role models. I hope you are feeling better, my friend.

    1. Getting there, Mary. Thank you 😊
Yes, I just wish I had had more time with him as he passed when I was pretty young, but I am grateful for the time I did have.
Once my holiday break starts, I will have a new toy to play with, so I don’t think stepping away will be an issue. You might not see me for 6 to 12 months if I am having too much fun 🤣

Perfect loving words about your grandfather. If you see the stars outside twinkling, you’ll know he’s smiling that you even took time to “think” about him.

  15. This is nice because even though you didn’t have something to say, you still said something and it shows the importance he had on your life because of how you convey the way you thought of him 🙏 lovely and well stated as usual 😍 you are creative without even trying to be ❤️

    1. You’re far too kind, but thank you all the same 😘
My grandfather would have likely cringed at a poem anyhow, so perhaps it’s best I went with straight up and simple lol

  16. I’ve certainly also had moments where I had the concept for a story or poem, but just couldn’t figure out how to write it. Or, I look at a prompt image or word, and feel the potential radiating off of it, and can’t formulate anything out of it. Sometimes leaving it awhile and coming back gives me the clarity I need, but sometimes even then I just can’t tap into the potential I feel in it.

A plain and simple post, directly stating the thing you wanted to portray, does indeed seem a fitting tribute for your grandfather.

He was a no frills kind of man, so more than likely he’d have approved.
in a world of fancy martinis, my grandfather was a can of Schlitz, and damned proud of it lol
