Over The Mountain (Updated: 12/27/24)

Daily writing prompt
You get to build your perfect space for reading and writing. Whatโ€™s it like?

12/27/24: The Great Prompt Banishment continues, so I am revisiting last year’s answer and making some updates. Pics, etc. Any new additions to the body of the post will be in bold.

If or when I get to build my own reading and writing space, it’s going to look a little something like this…

It would be somewhat secluded, but not so far removed from society that I’m like a hermit or anything.

It’s going to be quiet and isolated, preferably somewhere in the mountains. Lots of wood and ambient lighting. Rugged, but classy and peaceful at the same time.

And there will be a deck with one hell of a view, I promise you that.

Funnily enough, when I was younger a place like this would have bored me to tears.

“No tv!”

“No video games!”

“Nothing to do!”

“Who cares about the stupid mountains?”

I guess with age comes wisdom. Or at least an appreciation of the beautiful world all around us. An appreciation of the chance to have a few quiet moments to yourself.

While I love some of the conveniences of modern living, these days there is now a side of me that pines for a more rugged and natural existence from time to time.

A chance to satisfy that natural urge and truly remember what life is really all about.

I imagine starting the day sitting on the deck with a piping hot cup of coffee, quietly reveling in the majestic view of snow capped mountains in the distance.

A full day of chopping wood, hiking trails, enjoying the sights and sounds all around.

The sound of squirrels scurrying up a tree, a branch cracking in the distance. A bird’s cry echoing as it soars higher and higher than a man can dare to fathom.

Returning tired, yet refreshed, to a steaming pot of stew and a strong glass of fine bourbon.

A hearty meal and belly full, retiring to write of the day’s events in my leather bound journal. Trying to put every sight and sound into words that do it justice, knowing that I never truly can but determined to try.

With heavy eyes, the journal closes and I drift off to sleep, content in the knowledge that for the briefest of moments, I was one with the world.

Goodnight, y’all. ๐Ÿ˜ด

It’s pretty basic, really. Just somewhere for some peace. Not looking to be totally isolated.
I had forgotten what I replied until I went back and reread it the other day ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

  5. Perfect! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Ditto for me except I’d be on the water and my tasty beverage would be a dirty martini. ๐ŸŒŠ ๐Ÿธ

I’m not a big water fan at all. It annoys me lol

      1. I love watching the water and the smell of the ocean but I don’t swim in it any longer. My husband has a boat and goes fishing every weekend; I enjoy fishing but can’t go with him because I get dreadfully seasick! I just like sitting on a deck and watching the ocean, preferably with a cold drink in my hand! ๐Ÿบ

      2. I don’t mind hanging out near water, but I have no use for getting in it anymore. lol
I tend to prefer lakes since that’s a lot of what we have around here.

  7. That sounds amazing, secluded enough that no one bothers you but not so far away from the community that you feel lonely ๐Ÿ˜Š
