NTT and the Realities of Life

As No Theme Thursday approaches it’s one-year anniversary, I have had to sit back and take stock of a few things recently. I’ve tossed a lot of thoughts around in my head and I keep coming to the same conclusion:

It’s time to make some changes.

A gorilla dressed in jeans and a t-shirt thinking strenuously.

Wracking the old brain box…

As I am sure some of you have noticed, my posting output has dropped considerably over the past few months. I did have a health issue to contend with, but the other, unavoidable, reality is that every other week I work 60 hours. More, if I pick up overtime shifts.

Counting my commute, I am averaging 65 – 70 hours per week dedicated to working.

Anyone who has worked 12 hour and/or night shifts can likely relate to how I feel most days: Like a wrung out dish rag. πŸ˜„

Tired Gorilla.

NTT has come to be a bit of an institution, and the community that has sprung up around it is absolutely astounding. A lot of friendships and collaborations have been born here, and I am beyond proud of that, so stopping is not an option.

But folks, not gonna lie – I can’t keep up the current pace anymore.

As much as I would love to, it just is not realistic.

Every week, I feel like I am further and further behind, and I feel like I have to rush just to catch everything. And when I have to rush, I feel like I start to let people down. Anyone who knows me offline would tell you that is one thing that weighs very heavily on me; I hate feeling like I have let anyone down.

To that end, in an effort to keep this vital and fun for all of us, starting in February, I am going to be making a couple changes.

Time to move forward.

No Theme Thursday Will Be Biweekly:

As I cited above, my alternating work schedule does not leave me a lot of free time. Every other week, I am straight out. To help counteract this, and to keep NTT free form and fun, I am going to publish the posts to go live during my long work weeks. This should, in theory, give me time on my shorter work weeks to read and enjoy everyone’s posts and do a roundup without the pressure of a ticking timebomb clock over my shoulder.

Less Images:

Additionally, starting in February, I will be posting less images. A lot of you have already suggested that, and up until this point, I resisted, mostly out of fear that people would be disappointed. But, the reality is also that it does take time, and I pride myself on trying to provide quality. Yes, they are AI generated, but it’s still my simian brain that has to come up with the prompts to get a decent picture. πŸ˜„

Showcase Will Remain As Is:

At this time, I have no plans to change the Showcase post. I rather like the idea of a one stop where everyone’s work is collected for all to enjoy. Down the road, if I need to adjust, I will. Until then, I plan to stay the course.

In closing, I wish to once again take a moment to thank you all so very much for supporting me, this blog, and the NTT initiative. Without you, it would not have taken on the life it has. We’ve built a fantastic little tribe here, and I hope that this slight evolution allows it to remain fun and exciting for all of us.

Y’all rock. 🀘😎🀘

  1. You do what you gotta do, Kevin; you’re not letting anyone down. You just can’t think that way.
I have that mentality too, so I’m doing a WP purge….dropping the sites I’m not totally in love with. I’m spreading myself too thin and not enjoying the self-imposed forced fun.
You’re making the right move, man. No worries. ✌🏼😎

    1. Thank you, Nancy. I feel fairly comfortable with it now, but it took me a hot minute to get there lol
I knew I didn’t want to stop it, I just had to figure a way to make it more manageable. I can’t stand feeling constantly behind the 8 ball.

      1. It’s comes from caring and having a sense of responsibility. Those are excellent qualities to have; we just need to be careful we don’t fall down the rabbit hole. I’m getting dangerously close and have already started cutting back. It feels good.

      2. That’s great, and I’m glad it’s working out for you so well.
It just comes down to acknowledging that I can’t do everything and be everywhere. There are other things I also want/need to do, so I have to find ways of making things a bit more streamlined while keeping it fun.

      3. I’m hearing you loud and clear, my friend. Once WordPress starts feeling like another job, that’s the time to rein it in. I have no regrets sending some bloggers to the chopping block. I simply can’t have the life blood sucked out of me. I’m making myself sick over WordPress and that, my man, is really screwed up!! You’ll be fine. ☺️

When I am stressing over a blog, it’s time to take a step back and think. When I start to dread it, I know I am way overthinking it.

      6. Spot on, Nancy. It is sometimes easy to lose perspective when we get too deep into it. When I had a ton of free time it was great, but that just isn’t the case anymore.

  2. That’s a tough schedule. You are very creative and work very hard but you need to watch your stress level and health. Bi-weekly is certainly enough, especially as more people join-in.

    1. Thank you, Thomas. Yes, it is a bit of a grind and leaves little time for much else unfortunately.
I just can’t keep the previous pace and continue to deliver something I can be proud to share with everyone else. I take pride in what NTT has grown to represent, and I don’t want it to go down in flames because I burn out.

Your dedication to the community is admirable my friend.
I think you have made the right decision.

    1. Yes, sir. Less indeed!
To be fair, I used to only do about 10 images, then I got a bit out of control and started posting 20 to 30. It was just getting too crazy, and I just can’t keep up on my current schedule.

Kevin, I’m so glad that you’re making these changes. NTT is compelling creative community glue, but it’s only fun if you get to enjoy it too. πŸ™‚ Maybe I’ll even get to participate more with a bi-weekly schedule!

    Liked by 4 people

    1. Thank you, Stephanie. Yes, if I tried to keep the same pace, it would likely have ended poorly because I just plain can’t keep up on this current schedule.
I am also hoping this will kickstart it again for everyone. Another factor for me was the fear of oversaturation. Hitting everyone with 20+ images each week is a lot too. Talk about decision fatigue!

  11. I know how much you put into this every week, and with how much pride you take in it. It’s a wonderful thing, and you’ve built such an amazing creative community from this endeavor. However, until working hours become more the β€œnorm” I think you are making the best decision. Honestly too, you have so many amazing images that I don’t even get a chance to use half the ones I want to sometimes. So it will allow for more time to write as well. Every week, (due to my own chaotic work schedule) I’m always saying β€œoh no, I’m running out of time.” I can’t pump out poems and creative ideas at the drop of a hat like some very talented folks here. Yourself included πŸ€ͺ

So, thank you for keeping NTT alive. And I think the modifications are a welcome change for now, it makes things more enjoyable for all. If you decide to flip it around at some point again, that’s ok too. That way you aren’t rushed either putting out images, a showcase, or reading others work.

❀️ that’s what creativity and doing things for fun outside of work, a hobby (this isn’t our job!) should be 😘 😘 fun, not work.

We’ve discussed this a few times and you know how I feel about not only NTT, but blogging in general. If it becomes overwhelming, it’s time to take a step or two back and reassess the approach. That’s where I have struggled most.
There’s just so many hours in the day and that’s it, even when it’s hard to accept at first.

I am hoping it works out for not only me, but everyone else as well. Of course, people are still free to use previous images that they might not have gotten to yet. I prefer to keep it fun and a bit looser.
Thank you for all the love, support and kindness. Always. πŸ’—πŸ’—

  15. We appreciate any images you share for our benefit to use, Kevin. Even once a month.

My daughter used to work 12 hour shifts as a nurse at a hospital, which often turned into 13-14 hours. The day after was simply a recovery day. It’s a tough pace to keep.

Love you much. Take care of yourself so we can still have contact with you when you are up to it.

I did think about monthly, but I will start with biweekly and see how it goes. If I have to adjust again, I certainly will. I think the only person that will hold it against me was me.
A 12 hour shift is rarely ever just a 12 hour day. Everyone forgets the commute, overtime, etc.

I will definitely be around, and much love to you too. Thank you. 😊

  18. Kevin, good call on NTT. What starts as a fun thing can often turn into a burden as size, complexity and time requirements are continually ratcheted up. I think going to a scaled-down biweekly version is an excellent compromise.

There have been so many NTT images that I wanted to write about, but didn’t have time. I downloaded quite a few of them, flipping between 3-4 images, thinking about stories. Others are still on your site. Would it be OK for us to use them, β€œβ€¦giving you full credit, of course, Mr. Spicoli.”? 😎

  20. These are very reasonable changes. You deserve to enjoy NTT as much as us.

Here’s an idea I just thought of: Perhaps every so often, especially when you’re brain-blocked for new prompts, you can do a “recycled NTT”, using images you’ve generated before and bringing them back, perhaps one from this past NTT, that one from that NTT… and there’s our images for that week’s NTT. As Darryl said in his comment, lots of us like more images than we have time to use as inspiration for our own posts. Plus, there are plenty of us who have joined in along the way, so some of the earlier images would be brand new to us. Totally up to you, obviously, but I just thought I’d throw that idea out in case you liked it.

    1. I actually did do that for the recent 1 year anniversary NTT post. It was almost all older ones, like a “greatest hits” album lol
Once in awhile, I do go back through some of the older posts that didn’t get a lot of views at the time and consider nicking a picture if it’s a particularly good one.
I also have a surplus of saved ones that I sometimes dip into.
      Great idea! Thanks! 😊
