If you are struggling with workplace stress, burnout or personal issues, I greatly encourage you to ask your HR Department if your company offers EAP support as a benefit.
EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program and they offer a wide variety of resources to help workers navigate some challenges they may be facing.
Many of them offer free counseling, legal assistance, resources to deal with substance abuse and even child care. All services are confidential with a few exceptions (e.g. you indicate a desire to harm yourself or others).
Programs can and may vary from company to company, but if you need it and your employer offers it, I urge you to use it.
In my time as a manager, I have directed many people to the EAP and they later came and told me that it was an immense help.
Some people are hesitant to use it because they fear it is not confidential, or they think it’s a sign of weakness to ask for help.
I used to think that too. And then one day I called the EAP.
