I sit up with the rising sun
This firewatch is almost done
Inhale the smoke from cigarette
Another night I’ll soon forget
I watch the minutes crawl along
I think of old forgotten songs
Anything to pass the time
I swear this boredom is a crime
All the boys are fast asleep
I’m off to make another sweep
Nothing but the sky and moon
This firewatch can’t end too soon

Anyone who has served will likely tell you that even though there is a certain degree of risk in their chosen lifestyle, there are also several periods of absolute, mind-numbing boredom.
There can be a lot of “hurry up and wait” inherent in military life. Wait in the chow line. Wait in the sick bay. Wait at the rifle range. Wait to be processed. Waiting. Always waiting.
There are also the endless patrols and firewatch assignments. These activities take place during both peacetime and times of conflict. Whether it be patrolling during training, wargames with other platoons, or watching the motor pool overnight on base, there is always some form of “guard duty” being performed.
This can be the most excruciatingly boring activity known to man. Even during times of conflict, when the stakes are higher, it can sometimes take a concerted effort to stay alert and focused.
These are the things most folks don’t see. They don’t see the life behind the news stories, the action-packed video, and the recruitment pitches. They don’t see those lonely, quiet times when all one has is their thoughts to keep them company. Or the times when you’re packed in the back of a truck with 10 other people, full gear, on a blazing hot day just wishing the fucking wheels would start turning.
While military life can be exciting and rewarding, there is a flip side to that coin and it’s not always as glamorous as one might think.
For all my brothers and sisters who’ve been stuck on firewatch, this one was for you.
Thank you and Semper Fi.
