What a Production

Daily writing prompt
When do you feel most productive?

Usually I feel most productive when I am doing real work, aka: manual labor.

Administratively, I’m not gonna lie, I am pretty damned good. But as far as feeling like I have accomplished something, it’s when I’m on the line exerting myself a bit.

There’s also the added bonus of getting to help the guys on the floor who are busting their asses day in and day out. If anyone deserves the help, it’s them.

While I have bouts of feeling productive and accomplished when working on projects, planning, etc., I think the most instant gratification comes when I am performing actual labor.

Whether it’s hauling boards, moving heavy equipment or helping the boys turn a wrench, that feeling when you’re finished and see the tangible result right in front of you really is pretty rewarding.

The old cliche about “a good kind of tired” definitely holds true there.

  1. Yeah..nothing beats breaking a sweat, getting a little grimy. I think it’s the spike in testosterone from physical exertion we appreciate. But it is truly gratifying to put in a day of manual labor.

    1. Good morning, Nigel. I agree that it speaks to something a bit deeper within us that some other tasks simply cannot.

I have no words to say your post itself is so meaningful and described.

  3. I feel you on this. I try to balance the sit on my butt thinking with getting my hands dirty. I think better while my hands are doing manual labor.

Makes a lot of sense. I experience ‘good tired’ most when gardening.

  5. There’s nothing like breakin a good ole sweat! Some people just aren’t built to do it. 😊

      1. I was going to write in my comment “some people just aren’t built for that anymore” but then I deleted it. 😆

  6. Same, weirdly. I work a desk job, so anytime I can get outside and play in the dirt, I feel like I’ve accomplished something.

I feel the same way but hate manual labor jobs (I love making things with my hands in my personal time, but I don’t like doing it for other people lol), so project management has been perfect for me. It feels like administrative work, but you can also see yourself getting shit done (important shit, usually) which helps me feel like my job matters. Ever since I got out of the service industry, it’s been particularly important for me to feel like my job means something and I’m not just an easily replaceable cog.

    1. I get that. Admin work has its rewards too, no doubt. They’re just not always as immediately noticeable to me.
Physical results to me, just feel more tangible in the short term.
