I Don’t Know

Daily writing prompt
What do you enjoy most about writing?

What follows is my raw, “in the moment” emotions about this topic. To that, I will add that a lot of it is just me processing several conflicting thoughts and should be taken as such. Maybe seeing it in print will help me sort it out.

I don’t know that I can accurately answer this, because right now, at this particular moment in time, I am having doubts about what path I am going to take.

There are several before me, and many of them include giving up the act of writing completely.

I have hit a point in my life where I feel there are too many “things” and not enough time. I can’t do them all.

Put quite simply: Something’s got to give.

What that “something” or “somethings” are, I have yet to determine.

The plate keeps getting fuller, I am getting older, and time most definitely is not on my side.

So…do I enjoy writing?

I think if I’m completely honest with myself I can say “Yes”.

The bigger question, however, is – do I enjoy it enough to keep doing it at the expense of something else?

And that’s just not a question I have the answer to quite yet.

Have a great day folks. Be good to each other.

    1. Thank you very much. I truly appreciate it.
My biggest issue is there are not enough hours in the day lol

  3. You gave your honest thoughts, which are always appreciated. πŸ™

So now, I’ll give you my honest thoughts as well. 😬

I think you like writing too much to give up on it for good.

    Back-burner? Sometimes, sure.

Write what you want, when you want.

I hope you find the answers to the conflicting thoughts as well. πŸ™

      1. Thank you, Alice.
The irony of it all is I have an odd detachment from my own writing, which is why logically, I think I could easily see myself stopping. Me and the written word have a very weird relationship that I don’t quite understand lol

      2. I completely understand this. I can get (temporary) detached from my crime writing, it gets to you. Then I escape in my blog, my books, Animal Crossing, etc. and recharge to return to it.

    2. Thank you, Laura. It’s not as much a case of enjoyment, as it is hours in the day. It’s what do I enjoy more really.
Trying to focus on too many things at once just ends up watering them all down in the end and you find you start not enjoying any of them that much.
It all ends up feeling half-assed in the end.

    1. Thank you, Kymber. I have a very odd relationship with the whole creative process, and sometimes I really wish I just hated it and could easily drop it. In some ways, I am detached from it and I never have understood it.

    1. It’s all well and good to a point. It’s that fine line where it becomes too much that isn’t fun.
It’s overwhelming and from a practical standpoint, results suffer.

  14. There was a time in my early thirties when I lost all 1500 pages of unpublished work. I didn’t write again for another twenty years ~ but after that I came back with 1000 pages a year of insights I didn’t have before, expressed in more mature and capable ways. I’m not sorry.

  17. Maybe instead of giving it up, you could just do it a little less? If “something’s got to give” and you “need more time”… I obviously don’t know how much you write, but I’ll always encourage someone to keep doing the thing they enjoy; even if it has to be a little less πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you. One of my (many) flaws, is that I often have an “all or nothing” mindset. Hence my temptation to drop it and focus on other things. I also have a very odd hate/love/hate thing with the act of writing that I, nor probably anyone else, can easily explain πŸ˜„

      Liked by 1 person

      1. You know… all of that actually makes complete sense! I, too, have an all or nothing mindset *nervous smile*… I tend to focus on this or that, and nothing and everything, but nothing else… which I’m sure you can follow πŸ˜‰ lol. Good luck with whatever you decide πŸ™‚
