Far Too Early

Daily writing prompt
When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

If I were to sit back and reflect upon my life, my answer to this would be “far too early”.

For a myriad of reasons, life has necessitated, since I was a young’un, that at times I had to fend for myself.

The particulars don’t matter, really.

But, I can say that there were enough times in my life where I either had to be the support system for others, or I was left totally alone.

I’m not bitching about it just to bitch, mind you. The facts is the facts. Life sometimes forces some of us to grow up a lot faster than those around us.

Is it good or bad?

Well, I guess it’s a little bit of both.

Good, in that you develop a level of maturity at a younger age.

Bad, in that you don’t get to be a “kid” as much as you probably should, which can come with it’s own set of baggage.

You can get a bit resentful and bitter over it. I have before. And I say that with no shame. I paid my dues, and if I want to hold a bit of anger in my heart about it from time to time, it’s my right to do so.

The hitch, folks, is in letting it go. That’s the real kicker, indeed.

I won’t sit here and tell you that I have let it go completely.

All I can tell you is that I try.

On the upside…

Since I didn’t have a “typical” childhood, now that I’m older and can buy my own shit, I can indulge in all kinds of cool toys.

I guess you could say I’m aging in reverse a little bit.

Gorilla’s Prerogative.

Deal with it. ๐Ÿ˜„

(P.S. They’re not dolls. They’re action figures. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‹)

  2. Aging in reverse? Sounds like a solid plan!….Love this! Growing up too fast just means you get to enjoy your action figures without any judgment–facts!

    1. Well, some “adults” might judge, but i don’t care lol
Thankfully the MCU and DCU made that a bit easier though lol
I like the thought of literally aging in reverse. Someone at work thought I was about 15 years younger than I am, so I’ll take that win ๐Ÿ˜„

  8. My husband, Marshall, was 20 years older than me. I never thought of him old, or even older. He supported his mother since he was in his teens, but he stayed young at heart. He was playful his whole life.

    1. That is so awesome. That’s one of the things i hope I never lose, is that sense of silliness. It just goes to show the old saying is true that you’re only as old (or young) as you feel.

So disarming, the way you describe holding that little bit of anger in your heart. Why is that so refreshing!? When I was ill, someone told me I need to turn things into anger sometimes, not just (inward directed) sadness, and your post reminded me of that. Having that little bit accessible can be a source of clarity and the material for making healthy boundaries!

    1. It can be a useful tool as long as it’s focused properly and kept to a minimum. It’s really easy to let it get out of control if we’re not watchful. I speak from experience there lol

I just feel that when I aim it, it ends up misfiring somehow, so it usually only appears when I’m beyond reason.

        Liked by 2 people

      2. Well, we’ve all been guilty of that, I am sure. It could be that it’s misfiring because you haven’t fully accepted the concept of it as a useful tool. There may be apprehension on a subconscious level keeping you from utilizing it properly.
Kind of like not properly aiming a gun because you’re afraid of the loud noise and potential damage it could do, so your hands are shaking. If any of that makes sense lol
