Creativity Revisited

In this prompt reply from last year, I talked about chasing creativity. Ironic that I have been coming up dry on the creative front for quite awhile now.

The difference this time? I’m not chasing it.

I think, looking back on that prompt, that I have learned in the past year not to bother chasing it, because the harder you try, the less your chances of catching it.

Haven’t played in a long while, but I still consider it an outlet.

There comes a point, and I think it varies for each of us, where we know it’s time to set the pen down and walk away for a bit. Sometimes we can push through a minor creative block, but only so much before the final result suffers.

That’s when the writing/music/etc. end up having a “forced” feel. We can’t always describe it, but we know it when we see, hear or feel it.

I’ve also learned in the past year that it’s actually ok not to chase that creativity. It used to eat at me when I could not come up with stuff, but now, I mostly just accept it as part of the process.

Don’t force it. Go play a game or somethin’.

I don’t know that my thoughts about how to create, or what to create, have changed that drastically. I think the “when” is where my ideas have changed slightly.

With that, I once again wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday! Stay safe and enjoy!

Excellent point. Forced creativity. Sounds kind of oxymoronic. when you think about it, taking a break is the best way to revive those creative juices. Merry Christmas.

    1. It kind of is in a way, I suppose, yes. Whatever we call it, it’s frustrating, and best left to set until the flow is there again.

  6. I totally get that. I’m going through a bit of that myself lately. I think it happens a lot when you have multiple creative outlets. Something takes a back seat. I’ve been on my bass a lot. This blog… not so much. I agree wholeheartedly that you don’t want to let it go too long. It’s always about finding that balance. Anyway, Merry Christmas, dude. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ„

    1. When I’m working too many hours my first thought is sleep, to be honest. Pretty much all creative stuff takes a backseat. My mind just automatically switches from “play” to “work” mode. I only have so much energy to focus, and that one tends to take a lot of it lol
      Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ…

  8. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Kevin! I’m also going through a creative slump at the moment, and I think that it’s mostly due to me working so hard in my cleaning job. Anyway, I’m glad to get two days off work for Christmas, and I hope to be inspired by your No Theme Thursdays in 2025.

Too much work and fatigue definitely can dull the creative flow. I know it certainly has not helped me any.
Here’s to hoping we all find our flow in the new year! ๐Ÿ™

Interesting to see where thoughts have remained the same and where they’ve changed.

  12. We are all different, but I too used to beat myself up when I set time aside and couldn’t write. Watching, family members and friends struggle with illness has taught me to go with the flow. So scraps of paper are a necessity to ensure that when creativity sparks, I catch it. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas

Yes, it’s like trying to catch lightning in a bottle sometimes.

  13. Yes! This!!!

For my most recent hiatus, it wasn’t quite that the creativity had gone dry (just feeling a bit stretched out), but I just really wanted to take more time to play some video games, so my other hobbies got pushed to the side for a bit. And I think it’s perfectly alright to acknowledge that you have other hobbies besides writing (or else I’m royally screwed!).

    1. Indeed, if all I had was writing or making pics, I’d be tapped out pretty damned quick LOL!
I still have not been writing a ton. Just here and there in brief waves. My posting output has dropped considerably over time.
A lot of that is due to plain simple scheduling. My current rotation does not allow for tons of free time.
