Work Ethic…

Is dead.

And if it is not, it is on life support and the pulse is getting weaker.

We’re starting to lose this guy…

The amount of people who read a job description, apply for the job and then act all bewildered when they are expected to do said job is absolutely staggering.

And the absolute surprise and vitriol from them when you tell them they are not doing said job properly is even more staggering.

“Well, I didn’t know it was going to be like this.”

Motherfucker, you read the job description!

Even better is when you ask them about previous jobs and they proceed to give you a list longer than the Gettysburg fucking Address. And of course, every one of those jobs sucked for one reason or another and they are usually variations on the same theme – That theme being, they expected the lazy fucker to do some work.

How freaking dare they, huh?

Now, I know full well there are plenty of crap jobs and terrible companies out there. I get it. But, man…When you’ve worked at 8 different places in the last 4 years and they all sucked that bad? Either you have a knack for picking the lousiest jobs ever known to man, or it’s time for some serious self-awareness.

There was a time when out of every 10 applicants walking through the door, at least 6 or 7 on average were potential hires. Now, and I am not joking, you are lucky if 2 are even worth giving the time of day to, let alone hiring.

And people wonder why more and more companies are turning to automation.

I’m sorry. We did everything we could…

Yep, work ethic is truly dead. 💀
People are absolutely moronic, no getting around that one!

  3. True and why is that?  If you take a job then do it is my thinking but then you run into so many people who don’t or won’t – why??

    1. I wish I had the answer. Unfortunately, I don’t, other than it seems laziness has become more and more acceptable, and no one should have to sweat anymore.

  5. Sadly, this happens with the added bonus of entitlement. If I can’t do this job it is your fault for having made the job so. Hang in there, Kevin.

    1. Great observation. Entitlement and lack of concern. They’ll just skip happily onto another job at the drop of a hat

      2. Indeed. It used to be a major red flag. Sadly, I think it’s so common these days that no one bats an eye

      4. It certainly didn’t help, but honestly, it started long before that. People were already leaning this way. The excuse of that just opened the floodgates imo.

  6. Dude… I thought I was the only one. It’s like we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel, begging people to work. No one believes in hard work anymore. An honest days wages isn’t a good sell anymore. 🤯

    1. No, its not. Nor are benefits, etc.
Abd again, I get that some jobs truly suck, but they are not all that horrendous. They more leeway you give the more people expect. Pathetic.

  8. On the flip side of this topic … why is there a CVS receipt long of duties for jack s*** (you got me cussing … lol) for barely enough food and shelter (nothing else)!? And if you do swoop through the hoops, standing on your head, dangling in the air; hours will be cut, and a write-up is next! God help you if you get injured and if you can find two, you’ve won the lottery! Great take and awesome delivery!

    1. Not claiming that some companies don’t suck and wages are a joke in some places, but every single job is not like that and I have seen people treat pretty good paying, easy jobs with the same disdain as digging a ditch in the desert. It’s a joke really.

  9. “I release you to the competition” is a line I learned at a management conference as a back pat/shove out the door termination . I’d love to use that.

I think the same percentage of people still have a strong work ethic, but there are more people overall and more companies that need them. I don’t think having a long list of past employers vs. a short one means anything because I’ve found that the stupidest and laziest people I know are more likely to stick with the same job their whole lives simply because leaving would be too much work, while people who work hard know that it would be relatively easy to find a better job if things go south. Of course, there is a limit, and if someone is changing jobs every 6 months there’s something else going on.
But with so many companies out there and so few people who are more than chaff, it’s actually a miracle when a business has more than a handful of people who give a damn working there.

    1. There is definitely a higher chaff to wheat ratio these days.
And yes, it is rare to find a place with more than a few worth their salt.
Of course, the really bad ones often overshadow the good and perhaps skew our perception somewhat.
Even with that in mind, it’s a frustrating time to be a worker, as the loads are rarely balanced anymore. The high performers keep taking on more and more to offset the negligent portion of the workforce.

Yeah, it can be hard to set boundaries when you’re being tasked with all the extra work. Depending on where you work it might not even be possible. Where I work I have about 70 service requests, 50 more than the next highest person, and I just track a top 5 and let them know that’s all I’m working on. I’ll probably NEVER do the lowest priority ones. They’ll have to hire more people if they really care that much but that’s not my problem.

  12. Sometimes I wonder if people have become more idealists than realists. Expect everything to be done and the concept of working hard is maybe disappearing?
I know what you mean, i’ve come across people like these, but, trust me, if people see that this attitude is tolerated even the good ones start to leave! Actually, I also left once for this reason too.
