Fatherhood

What are you most proud of in your life?

I’m actually going to play this one straight today. Shocking, I know.

If I had to pick one thing to be most proud of, I would have to say being a father, and all that comes with it.

I don’t talk much about personal matters, but suffice to say that, like many of you, I too know pain and struggle.

To say that the road my daughter and I have followed was a difficult one is putting it mildly. For more years than I care to count she has been my rock, and I have been hers. For a long, long time all we really had was each other.

I am proud of the job I did raising her and I am proud of the fact that through the worst of days we held it (mostly) together and were there for each other.

Most of all, I am proud of the strong, smart and capable woman she has become.

And I know her Mom is looking down from above and she is very proud too.

  30. Hi Kevin, I truly enjoyed reading your post. I’m 21 and I miss my father everyday, it’s tough without him but you keep on going. I have gone through the struggles of growing up, a divorced family and all that. I always knew that I never wanted my kids to experience what I been through but I genuinely do not want kids. Would you say this was/is one of your purposes in life. What I am trying to say is if raising your daughter was better than anything else. All you thought about life, did that shift once your newborn came around. I wish to be proud of something and I am upset at myself because I truly want to give back to someone and give them the life they deserve. I want to experience what you have but I genuinely cannot with a kid. I have a girlfriend at the moment and I love spoiling her, whether it’s a gift or buying her food when she’s hungry. That brings me joy. I just, I don’t know. I think you should be proud of yourself as well, she is a reflection of you. That brings me some light and hope to use that logic with myself.

    1. Hi Daniel, thanks very much for your comment. I can only speak for myself and say that once I found out I was having a child, my perspectives on a lot of things changed. Your priorities definitely readjust, pretty constantly, as kids grow and their needs change on what sometimes feels like a daily basis. Some people go their entire lives without having kids, are quite content, and that is perfectly valid too. Everyone has to follow their own path. I don’t know that anyone can force themselves to want kids, nor should they, maybe. You may find in time that you change your mind, but if you’re happy with your life trajectory, that is definitely justifiable too. You don’t need a child to be proud of things as they are.

  35. Two words that I think of lie to everyone that would read them. Compassionate sacrifice. All of us that sit by patiently watching others push and fraud to get in front. You could have done the same. No, you could have used heads as stepping stones and ruled the world from golden thrones. But instead you walked in the trenches and saw what you knew to be true. Your brothers and sisters will be in front, but of the vanguard, holding flames right to the fuse
